Lyrics...

Sleeps with Butterflies
Airplanes take you away again
are you flying above where we live
then I look up, a glare in my eyes
are you having regrets about last night
I'm not, but I like rivers that
rush in
so then I dove in
Is there trouble ahead for you, the acrobat?
I won't push you, unless you have a net

You say the word you know I will find you
or if you need some time I don't mind
I don't hold on to the tail of your kite
I'm not like the girls that you've known
but I believe I'm worth comin' home to
kiss away night
this girl only sleeps with butterflies
with butterflies
So go on and fly then, boy

Balloons look good from on the ground
I fear with pins and needles around
we may fall then stumble upon a carousel
It could take us anywhere

You say the word you know I will find you
or if you need some time I don't mind
I don't hold onto the tail of your kite
I'm not like the girls that you've known
but I believe I'm worth comin' home to
kiss her, waiting by this girl
this girl

You say the word you know I will find you
or if you need some time I don't mind
I don't hold onto the tail of your kite
I'm not like the girls that you've known
but I believe I'm worth comin' home to
kiss away night
this girl only sleeps with butterflies
with butterflies
with butterflies
So go on and fly boy

Quotes...

"I've been researching and listing words that I like the sound of and look of for the pollination stakes competition. There is a list of hundreds, so to give my mind a break, I had a wander down the back field to the vegetable garden and the greenhouse. I just hung out there, deciding with husband where to put the lavender - anytime there is sun around in England you can't take it for granted, you must bake in it, making yourself the sacrifice, if necessary - just to maybe make it last all day. So, since it was one of those glorious English summer days in the middle of Spring, I played hooky from playing the piano and flirted with the sun. On my way back from the field, with flower choices in my head, Husband headed off to the Arsenal game and I headed to the picnic table where my gardening book was. I passed the studio with the huge barn doors of the big recording room painted in madras, a Tuscan peach, which I had open all morning while practicing. Then bam. There it was... after all these months, I looked at the Bose, she looked at me, and I went right up, turned the tape recorder on, and bam...the chorus to 'Sleeps with Butterflies' was spilling over the keys and I knew she was complete. So after weeks of trying to write my idea of a chorus, the real chorus stepped right up and said, 'T, honey, you just take this down and I'll be off to enjoy some flirting with the sun myself.'"

"Did the day effect this? Did the weather? Sure. If I were in another space, then something as simple as a bird's song changes. Having started a song at one place in the world, say in Bumfuck on the road, then finishing it on a Winter's day - with that soft muted Cornish light putting the m in moody, bringing with it its own references, senses, and perfumes... all of these elements get included in that ever rotating palette." Tori's music has literally been therapy for me at different intervals in my life. I cant believe its been 10 years since Pele completely changed how I listened to music. Growing up as a teenager, her music taught me how sweet acknowledging pain was and how I could overcome it. I'd listen to the sheer magic of her with her Bosendorfer and being that her lyrics were so abstract, I could feel what she was saying before I intellectually understood. It was like one of those spiritual lock-in retreats as soon as I pressed PLAY on the cd player. Instantly, I was somewhere else where it was ok to acknowledge anything that I was feeling, both real and imagined. True artists can do that.

Gosh. Start at the beginning with Little Eartquakes or my personal favorite 1996's Boys For Pele. They are all brilliant. U cant go wrong no matter where u start.

I'd definitely start at the beginning and work your way forward. Little Earthquakes is an incredible debut album.

I agree. It's probably easiest to digest and has so many of her most loved and well known songs.
