Anyone Noticed BET lately

they are making a serious effort to play different kinds of music videos and other black images other that the ghetto ones that they club everyone over the head

Watching this show right now called My Two Cents...set is kind of cheesey but they are talking about images of black culture on TV...and are on point. They specifically have talked about Flava's show on VH1 which is embarassingy horrific.

They also are talking about how low the bar has been set...surely we all know this with the kinds of music is out there.

To me Hip Hop has really lowered the bar in music

Rap, man, Rap. Hip Hop is intelligent. Rap is Puffy and his ilk.

Wendy: He’s a girl, for sure, but he’s not gay. He looked at me like a gay woman would look at another woman. Lisa: Totally. He’s like a fancy lesbian.

Oh please!!! Flava Flav's show was no fucking where near brilliant. It was good for sympathetic laughs as was the Bobby Brown show. Both shows just prove how low we as a society will stoop for a buck.

people have this serious misconception on what "hip-hop" and "rap" is. being originally from the birthplace of hip hop and was there from day one. Hip-hop is intelligent culture and still bangs. as far as "rap" is concerned anyone who thinks that "laffy taffy" and this other bullshit is considered a form of Hip hop?.you are absolutley wrong in your thought.

as has been mentioned already: rap is the thorn in modern black music and culture's side right now...hip-hop is an absolutely different affair.

and as for BET trying now to attempt to rectify a situation that they've more or less have had a hand in constantly perpetuating? i find it laughable and i can't take 'em seriously. i haven't been able to take BET seriously for at least, what, 10+ years now.

Personally, I think rap died when Tupac did.

In my mind, rap didn't become the crud I know today as hip hop until those that didn't understand it realized that since they couldn't beat it, they might as well join it and capitalize off of it.

One thing wrong with your comment - Pac wasn't rap. He was Hip Hop.

Rap is whatever they call "Crunk" now. The South is pretty much all rap. Hip Hop is Mos Def, Talib, Nas (naw again at least), Pharoah Monche, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest.

Rap is Puffy, Most of the South, Wack-Eye Peas, in other words, truly commercial shit with so much pop appeal and weak and meaningless lyrics along with average beats and samples.

Then there are the artists that fall in between - Jay Z, 50 Cent, Snoop, Em - they straddle the line of rap and Hip Hop.

Snoop is in between Rap and Hip Hop because he was fortunate enough to have been tutored by the dopest Hip Hop producer of all time - Dr. Dre. His style has slipped into more of a "rap" mode but when he was with Dre he was pure Hip Hop from the gangster angle.

I understand everything you're saying except for two things. The first is that 50 Cent doesn't straddle a damn thing... he's just as "rap" as the other b.s. you listed. The second is that Eminem WAS great, and I'm a HUGE fan of his early work, like from the time he realeased Infinite and all of his "underground" recordings from before he hit it big, and I love The Slim Shady LP and The Marshall Mathers LP. But now he's just so incredibly formulaic and it just sucks. "When I'm Gone" and "Mockingbird" just make me want to throw up. He's turned into "just rap", which really disappoints me as much as I love him.

Sorry but you've got that seriously twisted.

Rap was... The Furious Five, Kurtis Blow, KRS One, Run DMC, Public Enemy, NWA, Ice T and sadly last but in by no means least Tupac!!

Puffy and the Wack-Eye Peas = Rap falloff

Hip Hop was the term adopted to take away the negative stigma associated with rap and make it more marketable and crossover worthy. In other words, truly commercial shit with so much pop appeal and weak and meaningless lyrics along with average beats and samples.

And what one producer links 50 and Em? = Dre. That's why I say they straddle the fence because their early work had some of the best trax ever produced and that was all Dre's doing. Hip Hop isn't just lyrics, you know.

Uh, you're talking to someone who used to write for Rap Pages back in the day. The term "Hip Hop" has been around since "rap's" inception, it wasn't adopted, it has ALWAYS been there and to say it was created to take the stigma away from rap and its "image" is ridiculous because the stigma will ALWAYS be "Black Urban" no matter what they call it. No name change will just suddenly remove the stigma.

To say KRS One is rap is truly ridiculous. P.E. = Hip Hop. NWA = fence. Pac = Hip Hop. Again, Rap vs Hip Hop isn't just one aspect, it's the beats, the rhymes, the content that separate the 2.

wikipedia rap and hip hop

rap:(MCing), a form of rhythmically delivered rhyming lyrics; one of the four elements of hip hop culture.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rap

hip hop: Hip hop music (also referred to as rap or rap music) is a style of popular music. It is made up of two main components: rapping (MCing) and DJing (audio mixing and scratching). Along with breakdancing and graffiti (tagging) these are the four elements of hip hop, a cultural movement that was initiated by inner-city youth (mostly minorities such as African Americans and Latinos) in New York City in the early 1970s.

Typically, hip hop music consists of one or more rappers who tell semi-autobiographic tales, often relating to a fictionalized counterpart, in an intensely rhythmic lyrical form making abundant use of techniques like assonance, alliteration, and rhyme. The rapper is accompanied by an instrumental track, usually referred to as a "beat", performed by a DJ, created by a producer, or one or more instrumentalists. This beat is often created using a sample of the percussion break of another song, usually a funk, rock, or soul recording. In addition to the beat other sounds are often sampled, synthesized, or performed. Sometimes a track can be instrumental, as a showcase of the skills of the DJ or producer.
