INXS - Elegantly Wasted (Background Vocals ARE saying - I'm Better Than Oasis) Hey Inxs Fans,
I found this article and this is VERY interesting. I got a smile out of it. Let me know what you guys think. This story made my day. In 1996 at England's Brit Awards (the U.K. equivalent of the Grammys), Michael presented Oasis with Best Album, which they won for (What's the Story) Morning Glory?. When the notorious brats arrived at the podium, Noel Gallagher looked at Michael and said that a has-been shouldn't be presenting awards to "gonna-bes." Months later, in Dublin, while Andrew and Michael were visiting with their friends U2 and putting the finishing touches on the album demos, Michael met Bono one night at a pub, where Oasis singer Liam Gallagher showed up. The three front men sat down, drank freely, and as the night wore on, young master Gallagher became quite intolerable. As he's wont to do, Liam grew incomprehensible, belligerent, and very, very loud. Finally Michael had had enough. "Hey, man, why don't you shut up and sit down, you're being a fucking asshole," he said. "We're just trying to have a good time, what the fuck are you doing?". Liam garbled a threat, stood up, and got in Michael's face. And Bono got between them keeping the peace as only he could, until Liam calmed down. The next day, photos of Liam and Bono nose-to-nose appeared in tabloids everywhere and mistakenly reported that the two nearly came to blows. No punches were thrown, but the incident put an end to the night. Michael left the pub and returned to the studio, where he ran into Andrew, who was off to bed. "He said, 'Man, don't worry, you don't need to stay, I just want to rerecord some background vocals. I don't think I did a very good job of them today,'" Andrew recalls. Michael and the engineer spent the next hour or so doing just that, adding layers to the chorus of the album's title track, "Elegantly Wasted." No one realized exactly what Michael had done until six months later in Chicago, while Andrew and Michael were doing press at a radio station. "I've been listening to this chorus over an over-great song, by the way, guys-but I've got to ask you, are you saying 'I'm better than Oasis?' I swear I hear that on the background vocals," the DJ said. Andrew's face flushed while Michael sat in silence, smirking like the cat who swallowed the canary. Andrew stuttered the best response he could: "Well, no, the chorus, as far as I know, is 'I am elegantly wasted'. I'm not sure what you're hearing but that's what we're singing...Right, Michael?". I love Oasis AND INXS, but I didn't like how Oasis dissed Michael at the awards show. Never got to see the 'real' INXS live. [Edited 3/22/06 10:17am]

I wish it would have been with Michael Hutchence behind the mic though. He was one of my favorite vocalists. And this story makes me like him even more.

If that was what they said, they were right. "Down by the riverbank in the old bayou.. I'm digging a grave into mud just for you."

I don't think the original comment even makes sense. It's just Noel's rampant ego. Mixed with drugs and alcohol. [Edited 3/22/06 15:09pm]

And I've heard the song hundreds of times and I have never thought that they were saying that. And in my personal opinion, INXS - the original- was better than Oasis. But I will say that Oasis' songwriting was/is excellent. "Down by the riverbank in the old bayou.. I'm digging a grave into mud just for you."

I think the last INXS album with Michael Hutchence(Elegantly Wasted) is better than anything Oasis have done from Standing on the Shoulders of Giants on. And I love Oasis(more than INXS), but their albums(or bsides) haven't done it for me in awhile.

It was Liam who said that to Michael when he accepted the award from him ,not Noel. Where the hell are Oasis now?..they are overrated Beatles rip-off chavs.

I know. I'd love a photo of this - Bono in the middle, holding them each back This must be around the time Bono wrote Please... Axchi696, do you visit any U2 sites? I've been on Interference a bit recently.

I've been on Interference a bit recently. Perhaps it was the same night as this: More recently: I don't know how Bono stays friends with Liam. Everytime Liam opens his mouth, it's to diss Bono as not being a real rock star. As if being a 'real' rock star is being so drunk that you sing like shit and ruin the gig. Noel's the sensible one in the group--and the writer of all their best songs--and he just talks about how much he likes U2. A study in contrasts.

Well, actually, it's John Lennon and Paul McCartney that were the great songwriters. Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. (Ecclesiastes 7:9)

Michael Hutchence will be remembered for his AMAZING voice. Oasis will be remembered for their fighting and for copying the Beatles. INXS wins that battle ANY day. Prince may be the purple Yoda, but Wendy & Lisa and Eric Leeds also sit on the Jedi Council.

Couldn't agree more. Nowadays, Oasis are has-beens with no legacy other than temper-tantrums and melodies copped from John and Paul. Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. (Ecclesiastes 7:9)

Couldn't agree more. Nowadays, Oasis are has-beens with no legacy other than temper-tantrums and melodies copped from John and Paul. Actually, they haven't had much of a Beatles influence for awhile now. It's been more 70s rock for the last 3 albums. Plus, they've got other guys in the band writing songs--not just Noel, He was the one who always through in the Beatles-type lyrics because he couldn't be bothered writing anything else. The Beatles thing is a red herring--they've always taken from everyone(T-Rex, Bowie, The Jam, etc) and made their own thing out of it. The Beatles just happen to be the Gallaghers' favorite group and the easiest one for lazy journalists to mention.

Other than on Be Here Now where quite a few Beatle lyrics are worked into songs I see very little similarity.
