thx to whoever linked to the Van Halen videos - cool. Unchained, So This Is Love?, and imo Bottoms Up! are all essential downloads as well - that was one hell of a band back in the day.

I believe Prince and DLR share the title of Greatest Frontman Ever. and to dave's credit, Prince never had to deal with that bitch Eddie Van Halen. lol

Someone else said DLR and Templemann were responsible for that great early VH sound, which I think is true. Put on your copy of Van Hagar I (5150) and hear how the funk and rage have disappeared in a flurry of Reeboks and pastel parachute pants.

Funny how Rudy used terms like "Funk" and "Rage" to describe VH the DLR years. I've always kinda thought VH had a serious groove to their rock riffs. Listen to the entire Fair Warning album for proof. Anyway, 3121 does sound plastic and lifeless, mostly. I don't think it's a protools thing though.

I read some Levi Seacer bit way back in '91 or so where he said he really dug Eddie Van Halen, saying he was very funky. You know there's gotta be some funk going on with a $175 parts guitar spraypainted with Schwinn bicycle paint.

Mike Anthony on bass had a lot to do with that hellacious groove. And Alex on drums as well... I've got some early 70s VH boots that are just funky as shit, like 'Rock Steady'
