DAVID LEE ROTH REVIEWS 3121 He's not really dissing the album but seems to be putting him down for working in a home studio and using Pro tools. Dave says it loses something when you don't work on a song and take it to a real studio. I like Dave's show.

Brilliant! A real expert on recording techniques and maker of some of the most important pop music of the last 20 years has spoken (sarcasm, sarcasm)!
Dave, how about getting your ass in a studio and making some music playing drums, bass, guitar and keys and delivering the vocals? Play the result on your show so people can compare to 3121! Who does he think he is? Peter Gabriel? Brian Eno?

Maybe he just happens to dig Prince, but prefers when he uses a full band as opposed to working with pro tools. It's nice that he's even taking the time to talk about it on his show. He may not be a musical virtuoso, but I'm sure he at least knows his was around the studio, and equipment, enough to share some thoughts on the sound of the album.

I'd be curious to know what Roth said about the album itself, behind where it was recorded. He could have actually had nice things to say about it. Maybe...????

I actually dig that segment, and the DLR Show. I have Sirius also. I did not hear the Prince review. However both him and Howard Stern are big Prince fans and feel ( as I do) pretty much that Prince stopped progressing and challenging himself in the early 90's. Not to say there haven't been some genius moments but nothing that broke the mold like Dirty Mind or 1999. Howard said he was offered and exclusive on Monday to premiere the whole album. But he said that if this was 1985 he would care. Before you flame remember Stern has said many times that Prince is the best musician on the planet.,
Anyway DLR has a vast knowledge of classic soul and R&B. His guitarist Brian Young is phenom..... and solos over the sexxy dancer vamp. Anyway from the reviews I have heard, the grammy show, the Rolling Stones, U2 he has been very honest that he is a fan but expects more of today's artists who refuse to change or challenge themselves. He also stated he is judging this as a 19yr snot nose kid up in the rafter seats in LA seeing his fav artists. He does not think VH is the greatest songs or should be compared to anyone. He is just like most of us around here who have tremdous respect for our fav artists but demand something more than rehashed music to be satisfied. Please post DLR's comments.... Music is the best...

I agree...I'm feeling 3121 a little; But guys...It's okay if someone gives a honest criticism of the album...Let's stop with the Fam shit...We should be able to differentiate between the folks who just shit on the midget because they have nothing better to do and the true blue music fans who have something to say....Let's keep our heads folks...

But isn't Prince's home a real studio? Or isn't there a real studio in it? Christian Zombie Vampires

Earlier, there was a post about David Lee Roth saying that "3121" will be the album that all is compared 2 and/or refferred 2 this year. I think he digs it. Anywho, it's not a matter of whether ProTools is used or not. Most all pro studios have a Mac and ProTools. Personally, I like 2" tape on a Studer, then digitized in ProTools. I know Paisley Park has ProTools, and the whole complex was heavily upgraded before the recording of "3121". "He's a musician's musician..."

what are Pro Tools? Pro Tools is Digital Recording software that most studios use to record and track each instrument, vocal, effects, etc. Weak as hell on the midi side, but great on the audio side. Overrated for my book.

David is entitled to his opinion but then again hasn't made anything I've heard in like 20 years. I would like to hear his radio show (I've heard that I can hear samples of it from the net but my computer is so slow and it't not worth it), I prefer the pro-tools tracks to the ones with the band.

Before anyone kills DLR for not loving the new album, give him props for being on the other side of the mic. He was responsible for many of the ideas of early Van Halen and is in many respects, a classic rock star.
Not a bad egg. Eccentric as hell. But actually more knowledgeable than many make him out to be. He's got an impossible gig trying to follow Stern on the radio, but I would not have spent my first show interviewing my 80+ year old uncle for two hours. Good luck to him in whatever he does. Some people tell me I've got great legs...

Aw, I didn't even hear or read about his review, but fuck David Lee Roth. His show is absolutely, hands down, 100% unlistenable.

well, as long as he isn't satisfied with...
FRUITY LOOPS... (sidenote: no criticism to fl or fl studio, as it is called nowadays.)

the production on 3121 is weak.

OK, show of hands. How many who've posted to this thread have a fronted for years one of the greatest rock bands ever and contributed music to the common cultural community chest that will outlive all of us and be enjoyed by both kids and adults 50-100 years from now? You are the ones that are allowed to criticize Diamond Dave. He's earned his right to talk shit about 3121. Not saying DLR is a musical genius, but he is much more of a peer to Prince than you or I. And, a general aside, I have not heard his radio show, but how can anyone hate on DLR? He made BRILLIANT records with Van Halen. Oh, right. That's why.

DLR keeps archives of his show at Davidleeroth.com I think so if anyone's curious they could listen. He did say he liked it but he's a big scitzo in his topics. He say he don't have ADD but I don't know. I think he's the king of the backhanded comment. Or maybe he's just not impressed by much and stay grounded in his opinions. He did compliment half a dozen of the tracks and said he'll not buy one copy but 4, (for his car, home, cd at the gym, or some BS like that, etc). Then he played some Wicked Wisdom after he interviewed Jada Pickett Smith and complimented her and the "loud sound" coming out of that lil' girl so I don't know.

i prefer when prince has a band. i like prince by himself but i definitely prefer the sound (and vibe) a band brings to the recording. its great that prince can play all the instruments but sometimes it amounts to musical masturbation. [Edited 3/22/06 19:31pm]

His critique is really deft, the guy has it goin on about 3121. He is right to mention the weak, hip hop drum crap at the start of The Word.
The feed is at the second part of the show. 7-8 am. Convieniently right at the start of the stream. He argues with the Post critic who can't defend the album too well.llol All you others say Hell Yea!!
