I'm impressed. But given this performance, how is it that I'm just not being Madonnafied like I used to be? Am I just getting old and missing her all over TV and radio like she used to be? Or is her success coming via some other means to which I'm not privy -- maybe club play? FEROCIOUS word of mouth?

well, we're also not such easily impressed teens anymore, are we? wink

True. True.

But are today's teens the ones buying millions of her records? Or is it still us? I honestly don't know who's buying millions of her records. I'm glad, though. I'm a fan.

Madonna Sets Two World Records!

Madonna's 'Confessions On A Dance Floor' set a new world record by going to No. 1 in a total of 40 countries, the most ever for an album. The worldwide sales now sit at 7.4 million for 'Confessions'. The lead single 'Hung Up' also sets a record for going to No. 1. It hit the top spot in 41 countries. 'Hung Up' has become one of Madonna’s best selling singles ever with a total sales of 4.7 million from digital, ringtones and single sales.

You mean it's one of ABBA's best selling singles ever... biggrin wink

who's buying the records is kind of irrelevant when it comes to us growing up and out of that teen/early 20s excitement about her.

but i do get excited about a tour! lol

Why DID this new cd sell so much?

No one's saying its any better than anything she's done.

Is it because its retro disco and it unearthed all the closeted disco freaks?

Nope, my favourite is SOTT, followed by TRC. Emancipation #3.

Honestly, enjoy Madonna as much as you want, she just doesn't do anything for me (exception: "True Blue", I really love that album). I think it's "I hire a hip producer and make some chart pop" by numbers. But she does it in a clever way, I give her that.

its cool that you don't like her...hell, sometimes i don't like her. lol what the point is of your coming into a madonna discussion of this sort is beyond me, however. its like me going into a morrissey thread that is praising him; i don't like him so why would i go into that thread just to bash him? makes little sense to me. but ok.

Sorry for that. Just felt the need to get out some sarcasm.

Btw, if a thread title begins with "she may be a talentless hag but", doesn't that pretty much invite the Madonna haters to participate in the discussion too? I mean, I see the point not to enter a "Madonna appreciation thread" for people like me, but maybe then it should be labeled correctly.

Anyway, sorry if I stepped on anyone's foot. Have fun with your discussion.

no worries, its all good. even in critiquing madonna, variety is the spice of life, right? the second half of thread title, though, was bragging about new records being set. to me, that says this is gonna be a thread full of madonna fans excited about those new records.

yes it does say that she is a talentless hag, but if you've ever stepped into a Madonna thread before you'd know that i believe and know Madonna to be the best pop artist in the past 25 years. I put the taltentless hag thing because i always find it diffcult for someone to claim she has no talent when October marks 24 years since the release of Everybody. How many artist are still revelent and moving the kind of numbers she is 24 years into their carears?

Well, if I ever learned something on prince.org, then it is that you can throw shit on Prince as much as you like, but never, NEVER EVER, criticise Madonna! biggrin biggrin biggrin

Btw, I admire her for being big in that business for 24 years now. I even would call her a genius - a marketing genius. No one has ever played the rules of pop business as perfect as Madonna - commercially. I just don't think that she makes good music. Record sales don't equal good music - otherwise we all had to love Engelbert and Cliff Richard to death. Anyway, I was the party poop long enough - have a good time!

And I still say "Hung up" is ABBA's highest selling single ever... LOL! biggrin

BUT she still can't carry much of a tune, is a fair dancer and is a mediocre lyricist, things you wouldn't expect from such a popular artist with such staying power. Her acting is inconsequential to this subject but since she's tried so hard I must say, she's a terrible actress too.

this is what makes it all the more impressive. she really has mediocre talent in everything she does. she's never been a great dancer - especially for someone who studied dance for as long as she. she's never been much of a singer though during the evita era, when she was taking voice lessons, she improved a bit.

it all goes to show that she has mastered the art of business. she really is the music industry's martha stewart or donald trump. she's the wolf in sheep's clothing, lol!
Very true. She is one woman who knows how to get what she wants. She has slept with every man who has helped boost her career. You name it. Producers, Music execs and all.

NO... she is eligible in 2008. Her first single came out in 82, but her first album didn't come out until 83.
