Connie :: Funky Little Beat (1985)

Connie :: Funky Little Beat (1985)

Wanted to shine a little spotlight on this classic. This track was very instrumental in the later evolution of BASS, QUAD and CRUNK music. Released in 1985, "Funky Little Beat" was an instant floor filler. Connie gives faceless Freestyle vocals and is as easily interchangable as Debbie Deb, Alisha, Nocera, etc. But the thing that makes this track a classic and a supreme one at that is its GROOVE. The tune's dead on bass was produced by the one and only Amos Larkins. This guy was one of the pioneers of the Miami bass sound. He is vastly underrated in the story of 80's urban dance music. This man was responsible for such bass/hip hop/party classics as MC A.D.E. "Bass Rock Express" [4-Sight] and Gucci Crew II's "Gucci Bass." He was one of the first bass producers to arise in 1984 and led the way for genrebreaking acts like 2 Live Crew, Orlando quad godfather Magic Mike, 69 Boyz and even Lil Jon, the Ying Yang Twins and the entire "Crunk" sound that's in vogue nowadays. He was the initial force behind all of that (for better or worse). Interestingly, Larkins accidentally sustained the kick drum of the 808 drum machine on a song, and a test copy was given out. Amos followed this path for a while, causing the industry to follow suit and a new genre was formed in the process: Miami Bass.

I am not taína. Taíno is in me, but there is no way back.
I am not european. Europe lives in me, but I have no home there.
I am new. History made me. My first language was spanglish.

She had another 12 Inch called "Rock Me". It's OK but it's not as funky as "Funky Little Beat".

Anyone have the self-titled album? Amos Larkins did a majority of it and I know there's a jam on it called "Experience." I want to get this on CD, but it's so hard to find non-vinyl.

Connie's version was first. I recently heard Debbie Deb's version, but it's not as funky and bass heavy as the original. Plus, it sounds kinda saccharin and watered down (like a lot of Freestyle makeovers).

Connie's has more groove and rhythm to it.
