My favorite, and arguably the most underrated lyricist of all time, is Kelvin Mercer, a/k/a Plug One, a/k/a Posdunous of De La Soul.

The greatest, I believe, is Rakim, the quintessential MC.

The other MCs:

Chuck D
KRS-ONE
MF Doom
Common
Mos Def
Ghostface
Ish a/k/a Butterfly
Redman
LL Cool J
MC Lyte
Notorious B.I.G.
Jay-Z
Ice Cube
Grand Verbalizer (X-Clan)

Among several others.

I got a 2-minute freestyle of Rah Digga on iPod that is sick!

I do realize your talking about rap BUT, if we're strictly talking lyricists here, then Bob Dylan rules!! No one can touch Bob when it comes to lyrics. He is the best in the business! I know most of you won't get it, but maybe one day you'll see the light.

mmm, nothing like some good misplaced condescension to get us through the day.

Well, then, Bob Dylan is Shakespeare's lickspittle.

Perhaps so, but it we're talking modern day, no one comes close to Bob's lyrics.

You know, I was going to add "hip hop" in front of "lyricists," just in case someone straggled in like, "uh, Carole King was awesome!" square But I gave folks the benefit.

I thought wrong. mad

Glad for this thread. Brought to mind Mike Ladd since he's one of the lyricists I keep up with...except, I hadn't kept up. Just discovered I Missed his latest CD Negrophilia...and that was a year ago.

But in the context of this thread, your answer is tantamount to "Heineken" when the question is "favorite wines."

Wanna start a thread about songwriters? You'll get no argument from me then.
