It's the closest thing she's ever done 2 a soul album. I love it. A lot of folks say that Babyface and Dallas Austin's presence really elivated the quality of her work, but I say it was just the opposite. She elivated the quality of their work, the proof of this being that nothing the 2 of them had done before or since sounds like Bedtime Stories. It really is a fine piece of work from all involved. And, 4 my money, the best tracks on this album were never released as singles.

Yay lol

I love 'Bedtime Stories'.What I really like about it is,it is a very warm album....the songs are very melodic and inviting. It is a big departure from the harder, darker, edgier sounds of 'Erotica' and I think that was the point. She wanted to make a softer, more melodic album...still very danceable and club-friendly,but more slower and sultry.I recall a funny promo ad for this album. It said "Madonna wants to tuck you in with her new album. That's "tuck" with a "t" lol She was trying to get rid of the sleaze and controversy, and concentrate on making strong, memorable music without the shock tactics.I think she succeeded.'Bedtime Stories' is a sexy album, but it's not sleazy or dirty.

For me,the highlights are "Survival","Secret"(arguably her finest single of the 90s),"Inside Of Me","Forbidden Love" and the wonderful ballad "Take A Bow".The other songs are almost as good.Interestingly, the title track is like a preview of the electronica direction that Madonna would soon venture into. The only dud on this album is the uninspired dance number "Don't Stop",which should have been replaced by one of the superior outtakes from this album ("Let Down Your Guard" or "Your Honesty").

Nay. I'm a huge Madonna fan, but it is probably one of the least favorite of her albums. I never listen to it anymore.
I don't think the smooth R&B suited her. I think she was confused after the Sex era, and got away from being herself and copied what everyone else was doing. The dance sound of COAD is much more her. I do however enjoy some of the non R&B tracks like Bedtime Story, which was a precussor to her work on Ray of Light.

I agree, the dance sound of COADF is much more her.But I like the R&B sounds of 'Bedtime Stories'.I never viewed this album as an attempt to jump on the R&B bandwagon.Maddy's been doing this type of music for years. Many of her early hits ("Lucky Star","Everybody","Holiday") are R&B-influenced.

I love Secret, Take a bow, Human Nature, Inside of me etc. After Erotica, it´s my second favourite Madonna album.
"When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really don´t like the idea that he could have it all."

When I first heard "Bedtime Stories" I hated it, but it quickly grew on me.
The sound was super smooth and very infectious. It was the first time that she relied on the hype of producers and writers to sell her record. Coming off of the much hated "Erotica" wave(I personally loved Erotica. I thought the title single was a 100% Pure Uncut Madonna single) she needed the backing of Babyface and Bjork. The record as a whole really worked and the singles "Secret" and "Take A Bow" did very good in the charts. In fact, I think "Take A Bow" was one of her all time biggest charting singles. Correct me if I'm wrong. The single that Bjork wrote didn't do that well, but the video made up for it. It had all the trippiness and cutting edge effects that defined the current "Rave" dusted era. The remixes of that song did very well and this was the 1st single of hers to be at the top in the underground dance movement. The remixes were heard on every dancefloor and at every dark basement party accross the globe. This was at a time when Madonna longed to be a hit in the underground again, but the underground woudn't have her. When she enlisted Bjork to write this song I remember a funny story that I heard about it. Apparently Bjork had heard that Madonna wanted her to co-write the whole album, but Bjork wasn't about have her name on something as commercial as Madonna at the time. Bjork agreed to write one song and then she retreated to an island to finish recording "Post" where she was unreachable. If you listen to the song it's very Bjork and Madonna is almost trying too hard to sound like Bjork. This album was thought to be the beginning of the end for Madonna and it actually ended up being a nice little warm fuzzy nugget in the history of Madonna recordings. There was Evita and then Madonna hit a home run with "Ray Of Light" and it's been non-stop success ever since. I SAY "YAY"

It a big huge YAY for me. Even more so than when it was out. I think it's aging really well and I find that it's one of her albums I'm most often in the mood to hear. I wish she'd make a smooth, sexy r+b album like that again actually.

And this is a perfect opportunity for me to show off again. mr.green

I have the sleeve of her face up into the camera. It was a mistake when the cd first came out. It was later corrected. The one with her looking up from the bed is what she wanted. The second picture.

Couldn't count, the last picture is the corrected sleeve from the one above it. The one above was the cover for the first pressing.

Did that make any sense?

Definite YAY. I got into madonna when erotica came out, so this was the first chance Id ever had to get excited about a new release. I remember picking up the Secret single without ever having heard the song and playing it, it sounded like nothing she'd done before, and in many ways I think this album stands alone in her collection in terms of its sound.

As has been said there are a few outtakes from these sessions, Let Down Your Guard, Freedom, Your Honesty & Love Won't Wait, all of which are actually really cool. Let Down Your guard sounds like Dallas Austins blueprint for TLC's fanmail album. I think Love Wont Wait is perhaps the poppiest thing she recorded since Cherish, and with better production should have gone on the album instead of Dont Stop which i think is ok, but the lyrics really annoy me.

Had this been released today, the powers of WB marketing dept would have ensured that I'll Remember had been included on here as it was a hughe hit, and the William Orbit remix would have fit perfectly on the album.

My favourite songs are Secret, Inside Of Me, Forbidden Love, Sanctuary & Take A Bow. I love the chilled out viboe of all the album, and the only track Id question the inclusion of would be Dont Stop which i think is weak. Id Rather Be Your Lover is perhaps the only time she's had real bass way up in the mix, which I love.

Shes said since it was the hardest album she's ever made in terms of threading the sound together (5 producers or something like that), and i think it could have been better with a little more work, the tracklisting ect, but overall i love the flow of the album.
