"5" is probably his best. He kind of modernized his sound on that CD and kept it real soulful all the way thru (although the cover of the CD is a ripoff of Prince's "S.O.T.T" LP cover).

"Are You Gonna Go My Way" has some great tunes on it. "Black Girl", "Sugar", and "Come On And Love Me" are pretty cool.

"Mama Said" is classic.

I think Lenny's best musical skills are on rhythm guitar. I'm not crazy about his leads and I think Craig Ross is a killer guitar player. He's great for Lenny and Craig can sound like Page one minute, and then hit some Jimi type licks the next. Very underated.

Lenny's drumming is OK too. Not to diss him, but his multi-instrumentation is not as tight as Shuggie Otis, Prince, Meshell, and Lewis Taylor. His last 2 CD's were pretty weak also. He needs to find a new producer and update his sound. He also needs to put this "funk" CD he's been talking about for the last 11 years.

Wow cousin...it's nothing else for me to add. I agree to the tee! I think "Mama Said" overall is his best, right along with "5". Although Craig can throw down on some Page vibes, and yes, he is HELLA underrated, it's just something about his playing that I'm not feeling. I don't hear "him". I hear someone else and shit. Even though Lenny wears his influences like a shirt, I STILL hear Lenny. And also, I agree with ya on the multi-player thang. Although I do the same thing on my cuts; guitar, bass, keys and drums, I KNOW the power and the glory is going to be in the guitar and the bass tracks and the lead solos. It's ALL about production. Lenny is capable of playing all the tracks, it's his production on these tracks that sound garage/demo like. That undercuts what he's actually playing, I feel. Shuggie, Rundgren, P, Bootsy, etc KNEW how to PRODUCE. Anyway, my fave album by Lenny is "Let Love Rule".

I think Lenny's big problem these days is lack of inspiration. His music is great, but lyrically dude needs help. The last inspired tune I heard from him was "Bank Robber Man" and that's been pretty much it since. He just seems so tired and like he needs to take some time to regroup and live a little. Watch the DVD, Lenny needs a sabbatical! He's needed one for years!

Far as his stuff sounding like demos production-wise, for someone whose music has such a pop sheen to it in terms of the writing, to have it sound as trashy as it does sometimes is just kinda interesting.

Sadly, Lenny's been in the game for a long enough time that I feel like he's reached his plateau. He just doesn't seem to have anything to say anymore and his lyrics are all cliches nowadays which make even the best music pointless. I hope I'm wrong because I still love Lenny's music, but again, dude needs to take some time off and do something else.

Lawd..why does Lenny's "ITS YOUR LIFE" remind me of Rufus' "You Got The Love?" Anyway....a reviewer said this of Lenny..what do you think of this quote?(it was from a review of the ARE U GONNA GO MY WAY CD)

"in 1993, he simply sounds like a weird sideshow exhibit, the man who never lived past 1973. Of course, it's easy to make such potshots, but Kravitz opens himself up to such attacks. No other artist, especially a successful one, has been quite so devoted to the past and ignorant of the present. "

whats wrong with acknowledging the musicalities of the past ESPECIALLY when they're almost non-existent these days musically? I cant blame Lenny(or anyone else) for choosing the ignore the musical climate of today for the ORIGINALITY, INFLUENCE and TALENT of yesteryear

"Are You Gonna Go My Way" is filled with rock classics, so I'd consider that to be his best work. However, the one album I've always liked him the most is actually "Circus", that's where he really stepped outside the norm and did a wonderful, daring, cohesive record.

someone on here made the comment that the CIRCUS album came out when musc was transitioning(grunge and gangsta rap had taken over) and CIRCUS sounded so different from all of that. That is so true because I remember when CIRCUS came out. I never got around to buying it but I remember listening to it and thinking...WOW. esp the song I CANT GET U OUTTA MY MIND. I remember liking that one. 11 yrs later, I think I may FINALLY get that CD sad cool

Thanks Brutha B! Glad to know we're on the same page smile Sorry to hear that the Lewis Taylor show was cancelled by you.

Yeah, it sucks. I just got my refund yesterday. Oh well. I was curious as hell to see how he brought it live.

Sorry to hear about the LT gigs in the US, I'm beginning to wonder if it was LT himself who decided to step of the rollercoaster?

That's my all-time favourite Lenny Kravitz song. I often have "Can't Get You Off My Mind" playing in my head when I'm walking on the city streets or sitting on the bus late at night. Hell, I'm gonna put it on now...

Circus and the 1st are my favorites.

It seems I always gravitate towards an artists dark/weird outside of the norm releases. Circus falls into that category, Like Nova said.
And as far his recent lyrics go man what's up with "I'm the minister of Rock and Roll" WTF?
Fantasy is reality in the world today. But I'll keep hangin in there, that is the only way.

Circus is my second favorite album from Leonard; it's more of a AYGGMW? retread but, you don't listen to Lenny Kravitz to hear earth shattering, convention smashing music. He's a good lookin' brother and his music is "good looking" too. Take that how you want.

Yeah, unlike some artists -- Kravitz isnt' trying to re-invent the wheel. He basically dabbles in what worked in the past. Nothing wrong with that. No-brainer music can be a lot of fun to listen to. Take Katrina & the Waves -- Walking On Sunshine for example. Or The Romantics, What I Like About You?

"Mama Said" was probably one of the best records in the 90's imo (1991). Two years later, the single "Are you gonna go my way" was released - a fantastic rocker! I was so excited, and then I bought the album - what a pile of steaming shit (with the exception of the title track and "Believe")! I've never forgiven Lenny Kravitz that collection of light-weighted ballads for little girlies and haven't bought one of his records since!

SenseOfDoubt

Due to this thread I digged out the first 3 LK records - the only ones I have and ever heard.

My fave out of these has to be "Are You Gonna Go My Way"; in earlier days I listened a damn lot to this album, and it still brings back a lot of memories and good times of long gone teenage parties. But that's it, unfortunately. His debut is at least ambitious, Mama Said is okay for me.

I can remember that he once said that he met P around 1985 (?), and asked him if he (P), would not get rid of synths, etc. P was not interested in getting rid of synths.
