The Rolling Stone review:

Smitten with obscure wordplay and ornate sonics, Donald Fagen hasn't focused on hooks since he reunited with Steely Dan partner Walter Becker in the mid-Nineties. So it's a welcome surprise that his first solo album since 1993's Kamakiriad contains his catchiest, most immediate compositions in decades. This renewed emphasis on melody hasn't ruled out Fagen's reliably wry metaphors: The opening title track describes how Manhattan gets happy when visited by a benign feline phantom, and "Mary Shut the Garden Door" likens Bush's reign to a terrorizing invasion of Lincoln Town Cars. But the tunes are as ripe and fleshy as summer fruit: When Fagen converses with Ray Charles' ghost on "What I Do" and flirts with airport security during "Security Joan," spirited results prove Fagen can still pop amid his jazz.

Recent interviews promoting this album:

Mp3.com

And coming up in about 90 minutes; an interview and session on World Cafe Live.

Donald will be out on the road in the summer (Europe!? Please...); and hints at a new Steely Dan tour to follow it!

Getting excited... eek

From the site:

2/21/2006 - Donald Fagen on World Cafe
The World Cafe will be broadcasting the Donald Fagen session FRIDAY, MARCH 10TH, 2006.

Session is not a perfomance, unfortunately...

Anyone attending the tour in march?

Ah, anyway, here's a bulletin board review of the Donald Fagen concert in Upper Darby, PA on 3/4...

As you might imagine, Fagen surrounded himself with absolutely top-notch musicians, notably the alternating lead guitars of Wayne Krantz and John Harrington and the drumming of Keith Carlock, who's also done some pounding for Sting in his career. The arrangements allowed every musician on stage a chance to shine without allowing any of the tracks to degenerate into a self-indulgent train-wreck. Carlock and the bass player (Fred Washington) really kept things moving all night.

The set lasted the better part of 2 hours, and featured songs from all 3 DF solo albums as well as some nice picks from the Steely Dan catalog. We heard, I.G.Y., New Frontier, The Goodbye Look and the title track from "The Nightfly," Snowbound and Teahouse on the Tracks from "Kamakiriad," and 4-5 tracks from the forthcoming "Morph the Cat." Steely Dan highlights included "Black Cow" and a HOT rendition of "Third World Man." They also ran through a couple of interesting covers. All in all, a tremendous show.

Nice smile I've been wanting to get a review from the show.

I let the station run afterwards too. I got a bit more of an indie-flavoured pastiche experience from it.

The Dutch (European?) release date for Morph the cat is the 10th of March, but I haven't checked if
it indeed arrived. We'll see after the weekend.

Co-sign! Picked it up Saturday too and I love it, it is better than Kamakiriad and much better than the last Steely Dan album. Classic stuff IMO. I have the feeling I will play this one much more than the new Prince album, hehe! Dude's amazing, what a display of talent... cool

not sure about Kamakiriad though, that one is hard to top... but hey, it's still so young and growing by the minute... so ask me once again in a month smile

That's steep indeed... But hey, this is his first solo-tour ever, and when will the next one be? On the other hand,
with the rumoured new Dan tour; they most likely throw in a couple of the new tunes, because they already toured
the previous album in 2003.

Will get the album today... biggrin

I think the songwriting on this one is more solid, and the tunes sounds less alike than on Kamakiriad. Not to say that Kamakiriad is bad of course, hehe! wink

Playing Morph the cat now... this will stay in the CD-player for quite a while.

Tight playing, hooks, harmonies, arranging and most of all great songs.
