Riot Breaks Out at Punk Concert

Riot Breaks Out at British Punk Concert in San Bernardino; Several People Injured

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. Mar 5, 2006 (AP)— Rioting broke out Saturday night at British punk band concert, injuring several people and destroying two police cars, officials said.

Some in the crowd of about 1,500 at the "British Invasion 2K6" show pelted police with rocks and bottles, forcing the officers to withdraw, police spokesman Sgt. Rick Lindsey said.

Two concertgoers were hospitalized with serious injuries, and two officers suffered minor injuries, he said.

The rioting began when police responded to a report of a stabbing at the National Orange Show Events Center concert. When officers arrived, the crowd became agitated and several fights broke out, forcing the officers to back off, Lindsey said.

After backup arrived, the officers went in again and extracted the stabbing victim and another person who was beaten, Lindsey said. But the violent crowd forced officers to withdraw again.

With additional backup, including Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies and Fontana police, officers lined up in phalanx formation to clear the streets and they fired pepper balls and tear gas to move the crowd, Lindsey said.

As the crowd dispersed they destroyed two police cars and vandalized area businesses, Lindsey said. A trash bin was set on fire and storefront windows were smashed.

The all-day concert was scheduled to feature 22 punk rock bands, including G.B.H. and the Adicts.

Society (often wrongly) presumes that fans of hip-hop lash out because they think they have no future.

Conversely, one can guess that fans of punk like the ones that rioted are really rebelling against what they will BECOME in their future . . . members of an establishment that they currently despise.

Concert Venue + Alcohol x Punks = Volatile combination.

Whoever held this event should've known that...

Nowhere in the story did I read about massive security. And since a knife was used in the crowd why weren't there metal detectors set up? Every rap concert is all about TSA-ing the s**t out of your personage, yet punks get to just come in a venue, a** and all, brandish weapons and drink to their hearts content?

That's just awesome. rolleyes

There's a famous punk club in Berkeley called "Gilman Street" and it's run entirely by teenagers. One has to pay to become a member to see shows. They book punk bands several nights a week. They have a policy of no alcohol so that kids underage can go. The kids do everything themselves and some of the best punk bands got their start there. The kids are hardcore punk in their dress and musical taste, but its a community base and a very positive environment. They also have a written mission statement which includes respecting others, I believe and by becoming a member you have to sign off on it.

and in other bay area news..Oakland Mayor Jerry Brown went with Oakland PD to a couple clubs that had been recieving complaints about disorderly conduct....when the police went inside of one of the clubs it started a conflict..Mayor Brown attempted to calm the crowd when two girls started taking pictures and screaming police brutality..Mayor Brown decided to grap the girl's cam phone and broke it...

now the girls are suing for racial discrimination and harrasment...only in America.
