Over the past week or so, I've been discovering some of Sir Paul's old albums with Wings..."Ram", "Red Rose Speedway", "Band on the Run", "McCartney 2"...and I'm really shocked at how great these albums are!

I'm so jaded by the soft-rock crap he put out in the '80s, it didn't occur to me until recently that his older, early-70s to early-'80s stuff might be pretty great. And it is.

And I've also been re-acquainted with the cheesy but VERY fun song "Goodnight Tonight", which I was crazy about as a kid...in fact, it's the first vinyl 12" single I ever owned! My mom bought it for me at KARMA RECORDS (remember them, midwesterners?).

Anyone else into some post-Beatles Macca?

Anyway, on the OTHER Wings thread I posted that yes, I do love Wings more and more these days.

I started collecting all post Beatles stuff a few years back and now I almost have it all. It makes a great listen even on random-play-by-years

You can listen to the unreleased yellow album (1970), orange album (1971),
pink album (1972)...

I even ended up buying...and liking Yoko's stuff.
(Linda's posthumous album is harder to listen to. One day I'll give it a second chance... ...literally)

what is linda's album LIKE?

It's really obvious Paul still had a LOT of beatles stuff in him (me thinks Wings was his Revolution-the band behind the genius). Post Beatles...I have enjoyed his music more so that the others.

Glad you got turned on to him/them officially.

i understand john's genius and i like his concepts, but i've always had a hard time with his music. it's always been kinda...brittle? cold? bitter? not to say it's bad, just that i never really vibe with it 100%.

paul's early solo stuff is FUN.

Some of his stuff is alright, like imagine and starting over etc., But he lost a lot of the fun that want with his music as it became more "art" and definitely more serious.

Pauls early solo stuff is fun. His later not as much. But there are still moments. His last one was really good. I do think his last "fun" song was Say Say Say with MJ.

oh, i LOVE LOVE LOVE 'chaos & creation in the backyard'. i think it's fantastic.

Despite my love for the Beatles, I've never actually dug that deeply into Paul's catalogue. I have Band on the Run (obviously), Ram and Tug of War, but that's where it ends for me right now. I haven't even picked up Chaos and Creation, despite all the raves.

I'm not the least bit ashamed to say that, even though I think Plastic Ono Band may be the best and most powerful album of all time, I generally prefer Paul's work inside and outside the Beatles to John's.

I dissagree on the above. With the primal scream album you problably are talking about the Plasic Ono album? In my opinion the best album ever made by a solo Beatle. Pure and honest music wich gives an insight in the mind of John. His feelings at that moment, his moods, his grief, and above all great simple melodies and super lyrics wich gives me chicken skin all over.
When you say his music becomes more 'art'then I have to dissagree on that one as well. John returned to a more simple approach to his music after the psychedelic years. Back to basic, more simple rock and roll. Nothing arty about that.
I agree on the serious part, but when he was on the point of returning to the spotlight his music was more optimistic again (Double fantasy / Milk and Honey)

Over to Macca...
Paul made some weaker albums in the seventies and the eighties, but also after the seventies he made some f*cking great work:
- Tug of war
- flowers in the dirt
- Off the ground
- Flaming pie
- Driving Rain
- Chaos and Creation

And not all the early stuff is that great....McCartney II (only a few listenable tracks), At the speed of sound (not his best album either)

I bought this 2-CD set a few years ago and I play it all the time




"Jet" is the most amazing song....as riveting as any Beatles song,imo.

it's because of all his rotten 80s and 90s stuff (including the "artistic comebacks" in the mid 90s that were just kinda boring) that i paused on "chaos". i don't remember what finally did it for me...i think i just took a chance one day when i was in the mood for something new. i'm glad i did it.

are some of his best work, they have that timeless feeling to them..... and just about each song connects with something in my life..

The nostalgic McCartney and Ram will always be my (non beatle mccartney) favorites.. but this one ranks up there with them due to the high quality songwriting..

Not to mention.. I applaud Nigel for having such a "ass hole" approach to paul..

Vanity Fair sounded horrible before Nigel convinced him to slow him down..

and the same with How Kind Of You.. in a way, Nigel took the "bounce" out of the music.. but for good reason.. the album reflects a more concentrated sound and I think that was the mission of it.. to make a great record.


Paul actually wanted to make a "Indian-esque" sounding album.. (notice the track Growing Up, Falling Down"... but i'm glad he didn't.. There is enough nods to that genre of music in it..

and also.. Its quite obvious the "production" of Vanity Fair is Nigel Godrich all over.. but it worked very well with Paul.. Thats a feeling i have never really felt with his solo music.. aside from "here today".. its very creepy and mysterious sounding.. swirling sounds.. like an undertoe.


looking back.. 2005 was a hell of a year for me..

Those four alone made my year.....
