Although I respect Madonna and Janet, I don´t think they´re the best singers.I love Whitney´s voice, Sade´s great. I also have to give it up to Xtina.
And of course, Chaka Khan´s fabulous. And how about Rosie Gaines?

perhaps if you said of the past 20 years...your list might be ok. I agree with Anx..what about Billie Holiday?...if you don't know her, pick up her "solitude" cd. It's magnificent.
What about Patsy Cline?

What about Carly Simon?

What about Ella Fitzgerald?

What about Edith Piaf?

they all have emotion in their singing. I don't feel that from Ciara..or Madonna.

What about Sade? Her voice isn't strong but damn it's sexy

Your list is short sighted as it is.

See my first reply. Even if you go from 1986-2006, I submit that none of those names would enter into the equation. As you mentioned, Sade is a better singer than most of the the folks on the first list. From Cassandra Wilson to Jill Scott to Diana Krall, you could come up with better names of singers.

Alas, looks determine a singer's legacy in this era.

PJ Harvey? Really? I'm not in a position to disagree because I don't know her work. But that's interesting.

I thought this thread was the 5 best singers of all time?

How can anyone like Madonna, Bjork, Ciare or even Lauryn Hill be one this list? Don't get me wrong, I love Lauryn, but she's no where near the best singer and neither are many listed on this thread. They may be female singers that we love, but most are far from the best! IMHO!

Ciara wouldn't even make the top 100 greatest female voices and probably not even the top 200.

Lauryn, does not have a great voice. In fact, if you listen carefully, she quite often sings out of tune. However, I am huge fan of hers and I love her music and style, but I would never say she has a great voice. To each his own I guess.

I don't have any problem with Lauren Hill's voice except everytime I hear her sing I think Mary Jane Blige could do a better job on this song.

I've never heard a better female rock singer than Shirley Manson. She can sing the hell out of anything. Don't have any others that come to mind; most of the women in rock such as Courtney Love, Gwen Stefani, and Alannis Morrisette actually have awful voices, IMO. Pat Benetar's not bad, I guess. And Annie Lennox is remarkable.
