Anx said: madonna's a good dancer/performer and a passable pop lyricist, and she has a great personality for a celebrity...but she's a rotten singer. let's face facts. if she sounds good on CD, that's a little thing called PRODUCTION.
i'm sorry...if madonna truly is as good a singer as aretha, tina, billie, annie, etc. - then i don't know what good singing is, and i'll be happy to admit it. Madonna maybe the best female entertainer of all time? But with heated competition from the likes of Janet and Tina Turner, but that's a different thread.

But with heated competition from the likes of Janet and Tina Turner, but that's a different thread. i think madonna's been more consistent than janet and tina. i think tina has way more energy and charisma than madonna, needless to say. i think janet's been edgier and more intimate with her work (madonna's "intimacy" seems so manipulated, even at its most delicious). but the QUALITY of madonna's product - her albums, her tours - always seem extremely well thought out, whether they connect with audiences or not. and sometimes i wonder if janet enjoys being a performer as much as she seems to enjoy being a recording artist.

I don't think so. You should've heard janet's interview with John Norris a few years ago. JN: So, are you excited to get back on the road? JJ: No, not really. I really miss home when I'm away. It's a long, painful process. JN: So, what can we expect to be new and different this time out. JJ: Not much really. It's pretty much just the same old me. It's really hard to come up with new ideas when you've been doing it as long as I have. JN: Oh. I kid you not.

I kid you not. well, i think she's worked the whole "sexual discovery" thing into the ground, and the last album or two seemed like total cotton candy fluff...but she has at least recorded her fair share of inspired pop albums. meanwhile, whenever i see her perform on tv, she may have great skills as a dancer, but she often looks to me like she's going through the motions and not really enjoying herself. at least madonna looks fully committed when she's onstage, like she really believes what she's doing. janet, not always so much, even if it's technically "good". does that make any sense?

Yes, totally. Janet seems bored. And it shows. Janet's next album is critical! That's pretty obvious. The last album was very uninspiring, something was missing, there were no songs that had any lasting value to it..I really want her to suceed and do well, but she has to want it just as bad. I think Madonna seems very focused and determined to be the best. Janet needs 2 cum back hard. I'd like to get a few Black Cat like tunes..and some of that Velvet Rope vibe.

The topic is "women singers."
By any objective measure, Madonna, Janet, et al, aren't even in the same galaxy as other female vocalists. Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holliday, Sarah Vaughn, and so many other jazz vocalists are defining female vocalists. Others, like Rosemary Clooney, are great traditional pop artists. Rock vocalists like Dusty Springfield, Tina Turner, Stevie Nicks, are all-time greats. Soul vocalists like Aretha Franklin, Tammi Terrelle, Minnie Ripperton, et al. are greats. Reasonable minds can disagree on Sade, but I'd say she's fantastic at what she does. Contemporary vocalists like Cassandra Wilson deserve consideration. But Ciara, Madonna and Janet? I must add Dolly Parton to this list.
I know a lot of her success is due to her personality and presence, but I honestly LOVE her voice and think her strengths have been back to the forefront in her last bluegrass releases.
