This is kind of a response to the "5 artists you hate" thread and I apoligize if it's been done recently. After reading all the hated artists thread (which I admit was very entertaining) lets do something positive out of that mindset. Simple, artists upon first exposure hated, couldn't stand, dispised, disliked or just plain couldn't get to it. Then upon further inspection or whatever reason discovered that they weren't that bad and maybe even started liking them.

Two I didn't like for a long time but now really dig are:

Beck - Didn't care for the whole nerd-cool/outcast thing at first but he's grown and so have I.
The Flaming Lips - It was the voice and that whole anti-everything vibe they seemd to project but since Yoshimi and Soft Bullentin I'm like this group has a lot of depth and talent. And some uplifting lyrics and not in some corny contrived way. Plus I love some "modern" psychedlic musings.

Mariah Carey, she is not that bad. Back in the 1990´s I would not listen to her.
Lauryn Hill. I still dont care about the Fugees, but I like a lot her album (not the Unplugged)
Some Hip Hop artist that I just aprreciate now: Timbaland, Bubba Sparxx, some Missy Elliot or Salt & Pepa things.

And, of course, Prince, I tought he was just the "assless pants" guy and that somebody made that hit for him (When Doves Cry)

Beyonce and Pink instantly come to mind.

The Cure

These bands have become sort of favorites of mine now, after having ignored them for a long time:

The Black Crowes
The Queens of the Stone Age
Paul McCartney and Wings
The Smashing Pumpkins

and I'm starting to appreciate The Who a little more now.

The Cure - disliked them for many a year, now I dig'em.
The Who - Maybe it was all their mid 70's anthems I heard a million times growing up that bugged me. Now I love their 60's to early 70's stuff.
Smashing Pumpkins - same with The Flaming Lips, the voice bugged me so I never took an interest. Now I like them, not as much as The Flaming Lips though. Really diggin' At War With The Mystics. Incredible.

Burt Bacharach.

It's not like I ever hated these guys in the first place, but you wouldn't get me buying their material(although I am well aware Burt Bacharach wrote stuff for the likes of Aretha and Dionne) 10 yrs ago, but I have come to love their stuff.

But give me Rainy Days and Mondays, We've Only Just Began, Solitare etc over practically anything in the charts today..

I thought New Edition was pretty lame until 1990 when they split up and did their own thang. Then, I could appreciate all their old stuff a lot more.

Sade- I just didn't get it in the 80's, but in the mid 90's it suddenly clicked and she is one of my favorites.

The same with No Doubt. I was aware of them, but didn't care one way or another, but a couple of years ago I had one of their albums and really enjoyed it so I ended up buying all the rest

Judas Priest- My buddy got way into them and hearing it all the time it grew on me and this was just a few years ago

Guns n' Roses- I absolutely hated them, especially that may this be love sounding riff in Jungle(being the big Jimi fan that I am). I had this girlfriend and she absolutely loved them and everytime i tried to turn it off she would "distract" me. needless to say they became a favorite

For me the most dramatic shift has been with Madonna. Two decades of complete indifference and disdain of her music (though I always admired her personality). Now I am a full-fledged fan. (But still a little to admit it) I think it's her later work that I'm into.


Also, it's pretty weird, but I'm warming up to Elvis Costello.

And...in the 80's I was ho-hum about the Talking Heads, couldn't really get into them. But now it's like OH...MY...GOD.

Talking Heads - I'm with you on that one. Back in the day I kinda dispised them. But just recently picked up Remain in Light and Speaking In Tongues in 5.1 surround sound. Incredible. I can't say I dig much after SIT but some stuff up to that point is nice.

I wasn't feeling John Mayer, but I like the trio.

Christina Aguilera I vividly remember being *angry* in the car when I first heard the song "Genie In A Bottle" -- I thought it was pop music's nadir. Totally had a change of heart after really hearing Stripped a few years after that.

Kylie Minogue Like most Americans, I either associated her with "Loco-motion" or "Can't Get You Out of My Head" -- her only true U.S. hits. It wasn't a case about "not liking her," I was just indifferent altogether) I thought she was just some flash-in-the-pan chick. I actually started digging in her catalogue, though, after downloading her Fever album and later buying Body Language.
