the mysterious and tragic death of sam cooke

not gonna copy/paste the whole article, mainly because it includes some imprtant pics of people and documents, but i never knew sam was shot and killed by an older black woman. neutral (and basically involving a cheap hooker in a $3 a night hotel mad )

Yep, it's true and it really is a shame. He was accused of sexual assault too if I'm not mistaken. A tragic end indeed for a man with so much musical talent and a voice like an angel.

Some people claim that the hooker story is a cover up. According to them, mafia connections to the record industry put a hit on Sam because he, an Afirican Amercian, was getting too successful on the business side of the game (i.e., running his own label, publishing, etc.). As I recall, this topic is covered in Peter Guralnik's incredible book "Sweet Soul Music."

Thats true, I also heard something similar about Jackie Wilson. I am also reading the book that Peter Guralnick wrote about Sam, called 'Dream Boogie', I recommend it for all fans of Sam Cooke.

Sounds like the hooker ran off with his money, leaving an intoxicated Sam Cooke absolutely livid and wylin' out on hotel management? confused It's that last part that sounds off.

I just recently started listening to my Sam Cooke Live at the Harlem Club cd. I bought it years ago ,along with the JB Apollo cd's ,and I got more into the JB cd's. I am back into those and I am being fair to the Sam cd this time. I really like the sound quality and the energy. That is a great recording! His voice was in top form.

I heart Sam Cooke. For someone who began as a gospel singer to be murdered in a seedy hotel under suspicious circumstances is such a tragedy.
The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

Sam sang a lot of songs that you probably recognize, but just don't know it's Sam Cooke...

That song was released posthumously, and it doesn't appear on that many albums. (IMO, it was a HUGE mistake that it wasn't on the Malcom X soundtrack.) But according to All Music Guide, it's on the following albums:

Ain't That Good News
Shake
Golden Age
The Man and His Music
Keep Movin' On
<---I have this one.
Portrait of a Legend 1951-1964
Chariot

I highly, highly recommend Night Beat--and Live at the Harlem Square Club is pretty good too. You Send Me is one of my absolute favorite songs--in fact it is the reason I got into Sam Cooke. mushy That song has a fairly prominent "appearance" in The Heidi Chronicles, a play that I saw in college. I fell in love with that song and wanted to know who sang it--and that's how I got into Sam Cooke.
