Jacko Says "I'm hated because I've outsold Elvis."

JACKO: I'M HATED BECAUSE I OUTSOLD ELVIS

July 10, 2002 -- Wacko Jacko says he's no freako.
Michael Jackson yesterday lashed out at accusations that he's a gay child molester who bleaches his skin so he won't look black, saying they're part of a "conspiracy" to "turn the public against him."

"I was called a freak, a homosexual, a child molester. That I bleach my skin. Everything to turn the public against me," Jackson said before a packed house at the Rev. Al Sharpton's Harlem headquarters. "It was a complete conspiracy."

In 1993, Jackson was accused in a lawsuit of molesting a 13-year-old boy. The child was one of the many young pals, including Macaulay Culkin and Emmanuel Lewis, the self-proclaimed King of Pop entertained at his bizarro fun-park ranch, Neverland, in California.

Jackson settled the suit, reportedly for $15 million to $24 million.

Yesterday, the usually reclusive Jackson continued a wild, high-profile attack he started Saturday, when he threw down the gauntlet to his record-label boss, Tommy Mottola of Sony, calling the exec was a racist.

Jacko - whose face has been changed drastically by plastic surgery - launched a diatribe as he explained why he is the industry's newest black activist.

"I know my race. I just look in the mirror. I know I'm black," Jackson said, as hundreds exploded in cheers.

"We are all brothers and sisters - no matter what color we are."

Wearing a black jacket and pants, Jacko said the music industry turned on him "overnight" after he displaced white artists as the planet's No. 1-selling artist.

Music moguls "are liars. They manipulate our history books. You must know that," he said, as the crowd cheered him on. "If you go to the bookstore at the corner, you won't see one black face. You'll see Elvis Presley and the Rolling Stones."

He claimed the industry attack on him began after "I broke Elvis' record and the Beatles' record" in sales.

The Harlem meeting - at which Sharpton and lawyer Johnnie Cochran said they would take on the music industry for taking advantage of minority artists - drew hundreds of Sharpton supporters and dozens of white teens eager to see Jackson.

Jackson, who was pumping his fist in the air as Sharpton yelled, "No justice, no peace," spent much of the two-hour meeting blowing kisses to fans and even giving a thumbs-up to one who screamed, "I love you, Michael!"

Sharpton, who stood shoulder to shoulder with Jackson, said he wants to meet with music-industry heads to discuss properly compensating minority artists.

Sharpton also praised Jackson for appearing at yesterday's meeting.

"Michael is no wacko," he said. "He's still an icon."

When asked if he wanted to meet with Mottola about racism, Sharpton said, "Yes, but it's not limited to one company. I want to reach out to all of them."

A couple of issues with this - who exactly is at the heart of this conspiracy? Does the music industry run Jackson's daily life & control the Enquirer as well?

And what's the logic in his remark about seeing no black faces at the bookstore on the corner? I'm pretty sure he could find plenty of books about himelf, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle, maybe even Prince. Or was he saying that only the Rolling Stones & no black people frequent bookstores in Harlem? I also am not so sure about his claim that he's outsold The Beatles & Elvis. He certainly hasn't eclipsed them in lasting popularity, & sales figures need to be fixed to accomodate inflation.

If Sharpton & Cochran really want to do something useful for black recording artists, maybe they shouldn't concentrate on the millionaire crybabies as much as all of those 1940s-1960s artists who were hugely popular decades ago but now can't even afford health insurance.

O.K. Why does Motley Crue own their masters?

You could say they suck. Fine.

Why does David Bowie own his masters?

The original gender-bender who broke down stereotypes as quickly as songs became classics.

Why does Prince NOT own his masters?

Motley Crue had major problems with Warner Bros. They signed a huge deal n were not selling 5 million per album, Warners wanted out of the deal. The Crue said give us our masters n the deal is off. It was over n done. Warners gave em their Masters.

Elvis Presley's estate owns his Masters.

Jimi Hendrix's family after over TWO decades of fighting for his masters FINALLY got most of them.

I try to not see Racism. I try n try n try but why is one of the most amazing, albeit, black artists of all time still not recieving his masters?

I am talking bout Prince, not MJ. MJ does own his Masters I believe. But he does own somethings that does not really belong to him, Sly & the Family Stones publishing rights & The Beatles catalog, which should be in Paul's Possesion.

MJ brought up valid points yesterday. Stay on the issues n attack the Industry as a whole, not one person. & yes, a white person can be racist towards blacks, even if he hires them in droves. All you have to do is look at Marge Schott, the FORMER owner of the Cincinati Reds baseball team in the U.S., who made comment after racist comment about black players, not liking them, but hiring them cuz they would bring her a winning team.

Bzzztt, dimwit, that's a news article. And it's not the wrong answer, either. It's what HE SAID. And he "broke these records" before he purchased the rights to The Beatles catalog.

Actually, what MJ should understand is that EVERY artist experiences some sort of backlash in their career. They put you on a pedestal and then they tear you down.Remember in the mid-80s when Prince could do no wrong? Many of those same people who bought 'Purple Rain' now say he's insane.Even Madonna experienced a slight backlash in 1993 after that 'Sex' book.

IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MONEY

We do live in a world full of racism but I very much doubt SONY's problems with MJ have anything to do with the colour of his skin (although that is a tricky one - sorry I could not resist)

SONY is a business, a huge multinational conglomerate for whom MJ is just a relatively small component (check out who they own and what the combined turnover is). The accounts department will look at the figures and decide that 30 million to record + millions more to promote an album that is "only" going to sell 5-7 million copies is an absurd waste of money.

IF Thriller had only come out a few of years back and had sold it's 50 million then I bet SONY would be happily ploughing money into Invincible. But it was 1983! Since then every MJ album has sold less than the previous one (although before an MJ fan flames me - the figures are still amazingingly high).

It's the law of diminished returns. If you have a product that is far less popular than it was 20 years ago and if it is going to cost a huge amount of money to try and change that then the accounts department will recommend to drop the product line and develop a new one.

Best thing for MJ now would be to fulfill his contract (greatest hits plus couple new songs). Then go away a record a killer album and release it independently (he must have enough cash to start his own multinational). If it is a great album it will sell and he can stick two fingers up at SONY (and they will sack a few Execs).

That's the problem with artists (Prince included) they don't see this as a business:

Artist, "Give me my masters"
Exec, "Why, you signed the contract they belong to us"
Artist, "But I want them. Morally they belong to me"
Exec, "As we said, you signed the contract, they belong to us. Now go away and record us another big selling album and perhaps we can talk"
Artist, "Right I'm gonna sulk and just spend the next five years telling everyone about how unfair this is and not give you any music, or perhaps sub standard music, that'll show you"
Exec, "Well if you just recorded the couple of albums you owe us in the same way you always have, same quality etc, then your fans will be happy and still buy them and you will be out of the contract with no mess"
Artist, "That would be too easy!"

Irish...you really have to stop reading the NYPost and NYDaily News--where you undoubtedly got this piece of shite.
They're worse than a tabloid because they both pretend to be real newspapapers...they make up fake quotes all the time.
At the very least, post the paper or site where you get this crap. thanks IE.

i really liked your response. and it makes sense in a way. also, since mj is almost at the end of his contract, sony ain't gonna promate it.
but lets say an artist records music that sells well and their contract has ended, do they then own their own masters? or what if an artist who sold a lot with their debut album or even sophmore album, can they renegotiate their contract? should artists renegotiate or just make a new contract? also, lets say an artist wants a high royalty rate as a new comer and also as an artist who already had success in the past, what should they do?

I haven't seen one black face he has dated or married over the years either, NOT ONE, and he has the nerve to bring up Elvis in this instance when he had a fake marriage to the fat man's daughter. Why didn't he bring this up when he was hobknobing with white celebrities the likes of Liz Taylor and Katherine Hepburn?

not only did mj beat some of elvis' records, he led a similar lifestyle.
elvis has graceland. mj has neverland.
elvis had animals of all sorts. so does mj.
elvis had lisa. mj married lisa.
elvis is called the king of rocknroll. mj calls himself the king of pop.
elvis slept with under-age girls or at least dated them. mj goes for the older types or at least 10 years young.
elvis' similar life like mj is always seen as pure, and great. while mj's lifestyle is seen as eccentric.

all you people complaining about rich, pathetic stars that have 'expired', commercially speaking, and whining and whining, and wondering why they're doing it:

Just because artistic slavery isn't something you see the effects of easily in your fast-food world, it doesn't mean it's not a cause worth airing in public. The music industry is one of the few industries in the industrialised world where virtual slavery is so prevalent, yet sooo not discussed. People cannot see the relationship, in their world, between shiny cars, mansions and nice clothes & slavery. Well, for every artist that is a commercial success (but still exploited), countless others are exploited and fail. You just don't see most artists complaining, and when they do, it's usually too late and hidden on some obscure page in the newspaper when the artist is 78 and demanding payment for what is due. And that's the issue: simply demanding what is DUE. Artists have been singing about exploitation in the music business for too long (I probably heard my first track 10 years before Prince started complaining from a group called "Guy"), and it's about time some big names voiced their concerns and are being heard.

Thank You. Come again.
