madonna confirmed for coachella i checked around to see if anyone posted this. i know a great many of you will be excited and a bunch of you will bash coachella for this...
Amy Phillips reports: Looks like it will be Confessions on a Desert Floor this spring, as Pitchfork has just been informed that Madonna will perform at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on April 30. Madonna, meet Coachella. Coachella, meet Madonna. Has a nice Uma/Oprah ring to it, don't it? Her Highness will rock the "Dance Tent" on the Indio, California fest's second day, and it won't be just another chintzy DJ/vocal set. We're talking a full-on extravaganza with dancers, costumes, lights, unicorns, spaceships, and rainbows (unicorns, spaceships, and rainbows not guaranteed). This whole thing might be some lame attempt at ingratiating Madonna to the indie/hipster demographic, but it's not like she needs any help: we've all pretty much agreed that "Hung Up" rules (it came it at number 26 on our Top Singles of 2005 list, after all). And I'd be lying if I said I wasn't excited about seeing Madonna play a tent in the desert. As previously reported, Coachella will feature every cool band on the planet, as well as Matisyahu and She Wants Revenge. The lineup, as it stands right now: Saturday, April 29: Depeche Mode, Daft Punk (dance tent), Franz Ferdinand, Sigur Rós, Common, Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley, Atmosphere, Carl Cox, My Morning Jacket, TV on the Radio, Ladytron , Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Tosca, Cat Power, Animal Collective, Hard-Fi, Derrick Carter, Devendra Banhart, She Wants Revenge, the Walkmen, the Juan Maclean, Audio Bullys, Imogen Heap, Lady Sovereign, Deerhoof, the Duke Spirit, Eagles of Death Metal, Lyrics Born, Matt Costa, the New Amsterdams, the Zutons, Platinum Pied Pipers, White Rose Movement, Chris Liberator, Colette, Joey Beltram, Hybrid, Wolfmother, the Like, Living Things, Nine Black Alps, Celebration, the Section Quartet, Shy FX & T Power, Infusion Sunday, April 30: Tool, Madonna (dance tent), Massive Attack, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Bloc Party, Paul Oakenfold, Scissor Sisters, Matisyahu, James Blunt, Sleater-Kinney, Mogwai, Coheed and Cambria, Gnarls Barkley, Coldcut, Phoenix, Digable Planets, Amadou & Mariam, Louie Vega, Mylo (DJ Set), Seu Jorge, Wolf Parade, Ted Leo/Pharmacists, the Go! Team, Kaskade, Metric, Editors, stellastarr*, Art Brut, Dungen, the Dears, Jamie Lidell, the Magic Numbers, Los Amigos Invisibles, Jazzanova, Michael Mayer, Murs featuring 9th Wonder, Mates of State, Gilles Peterson, Gabriel & Dresden, the Subways, Minus the Bear, OneRepublic, Be Your Own Pet, Giant Drag, Kristina Sky, Infadels, Youth Group, the Octopus Project * Pitchfork Review: Madonna: Confessions on a Dance Floor * Pitchfork Track Review: Madonna: "Hung Up" * Pitchfork News: Coachella Lineup Announced at Last * Pitchfork News: Coachella Dates, Concert Film Scheduled * Madonna: http://madonna.com/ * Coachella Valley Music Festival: http://coachella.com/

I just saw this!
Crazy stuff, although it makes more sense seeing she'll be in the dance tent. I'm just wondering if your "standard" madonna fan will be up for a crazy fest like Coachella. I would LOVE it, but...

I'll be curious to see how this goes over. I hope it doesn't turn into another Lollapalooza/Metallica thing.

Madonna at Coachella is a strange marriage but it has the potential to be an amazingly unique opportunity to see someone as big as Madonna in a very intimate setting. The Sahara Dance Tent is very small. It will be busting at the seams. I saw The Bravery there last year and I believe it's the same tent Miss Kittin played at as well. If you want to see Madonna(I mean actually see her with your two eyes) you're going to have to arrive super early.I'm going to get there 3 or 4 acts beforehand. The tent crowds up and when it's full you aren't going anywhere. It's flat too, so if you far away there isn't much to see. They don't have video, but maybe she will being she is Madonna and all.
It will be an experience you won't want to miss if you're a Madonna fan! endorphin74 said: my

Get a move on then and start buying new music. The line up is superb and you owe it to yourself to enjoy the music the world is putting out these days! BTW: The line up isn't mostly techno/electronic. It's a mix of everything. Hip Hop, Techno, Alternative, Indie, etc.... If you can swing it you should try and make it to Coachella. I have discovered some of my favorite music there over the past few years. Enought of my preaching!

Hell, I'd go just to see Digable Planets! I wonder if it's the same original members? Hmmm? "Free yo mind and yo ass will follow" - George Clinton

I detect some strange musical inverse-snobbery amongst U.S. music fans - especially reading that report.
This wouldn't raise eyebrows at all at a European festival.

This wouldn't raise eyebrows at all at a European festival. I know. Y'all put Kylie on the Pyramid stage! Which is NO problem for me. I think the festivaly scene is really young in the US, so this is pretty out of the ordinary. But, hopefully a sign that the destination festivals are really finding their footing and becoming their own.

It's funny. That girl is crayzee. And a lot of Prince fans should know The Like because Wendy produced their album. bold edit [Edited 3/2/06 12:25pm]
