There's A Riot Goin' On--Where is The Respect for This Album??? I'm currently listening to Sly and The Family Stone's "There's A Riot Goin' On" and I must say I am disappointed by the sound quality of the CD and the complete omission of the original album cover and liner notes. I guess Sony music wants to bury the deep messages of this album behind poor sound and by selectively omitting the liner notes. Prince hit the nail on the head with that verse in "The Everlasting Now", sadly Sly will never get the credit he deserves. Michael Jackson should be slapped for buying Sly's publishing rights and not having the decency to force Sony to restore the album to its original glory.

i totally agree w/you.
riot is one of my favorite albums of all time. sly is a genious and really doesnt get the credit he deserves for being a great multi-instumentalist and song writer. the cd quality is bad and mj should be shot for letting that happen. i dont know if you own a turntable or not, but you can still find it on vinyl at some record stores/thrift stores. the sound quality on the vinyl is great. i am a dj and i often play some of the cuts from the album out at my gigs. good post! djdredd

There's a riot... I love it. Prince himself pointed out the similarities between Just like a baby and The question of U (bassline). I also always thought that Diamonds and Pearls's chorus is not unlike Family Affair's. [This message was edited Mon Jul 8 20:30:26 PDT 2002 by Aerogram]

After the hippy love of previous Sly albums, this was the sound of a junkie nodding off-paraphrased. Essential listening. The mud is what makes it work--Just like Exile On Main Streets sludge production, it's what makes it special. [This message was edited Mon Jul 8 21:47:05 PDT 2002 by rdhull] "Climb in my fur."

Those who truly know their funk know that RIOT is a true classic of the genre. It mos def gets its props and respect. You just ain't hanging 'round the right folks! The orignal album cover is a great controversy. It feature a desecration of the US flag. A full-size replica with no lettering graphics and 16 pt stars in the field and the stripes are irregular and ragged-curvy. These LPs are very rare collector's items. I doubt you will every see this one reissued. Another rarity is the orignal Dramatics WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU GET from '72, which featured a large disembodied black eye in a grim display of psychedelica...unheard of for a R&B vocal group! I wanna know if any PRINCE fans any love for FISHBONE? test

The crazy thing is the three albums prior to "Stand" have been re-issued with bonus tracks.
For some perverse reason Sly's classic trio of "Stand", "Riot" and "Fresh" have been ignored. Go figure...

Aren't they all a big freaking funking family ??? No need to speak in the past tense. They are very active with their own label. Their latest was recorded live at spots here in LA and elsewhere. www.fishbone.net You can hear ME on it. I need to cop that MeShell; probably this week test

I like Fishbone a lot, but I don't own anything by them. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

I wanna know if any PRINCE fans any love for FISHBONE? Yo PFUNKJAZZ, my uncle had that album and I remember seeing that flag on the cover, it is a collectors item. This is one of the most important albums in FUNK and ROCK history. Yes, this record, as well as, Sly's trilogy of important albums STAND, THERE'S A RIOT GOING ON, and FRESH are need of remastering. Sly took the whole world by surprise with this one though. Dark, sardonic yet troubling introspective lyrics.Poetically it is amazing. Sly was a troubled man at the time... "The shorter cut is quicker but...HA HA HA HA..time is here to stay...look at you fooling you... "You're deeper in debt the harder your bet...HEE HEE HEE HEE...you need more room to play...look at you fooling you Lyrics to Runnin Away Sly influenced on modern day funk pop and R$B is immeasureable. He was such an original, a true innovator and a daring visionary. Like Hendrix and Miles, the more time passes, the better his music is looking back in retrospect.

I'm still waiting for P to actually do 'Just Like A Baby', in concert - not a cover. RIOT would be a definite 'stranded island' pack for me.

Yes my pops got that album too (with that eye looking through some trees on the album cover). This Dramatics album is a 70's soul classic. Every song on this one is great. I love Ron Banks style of singing. He has that powerful gritty delivery. I love the way he sings on "In The Summertime"..."HEYYY THERE GIRL...YOU SHO LOOK GOOD IN THOSE HOT PANTS HOT PANTS" (LOL)
