I'll most likely never get to see Madonna, because she is so selective where she schedules dates for her shows. The closest she'll come to Pittsburgh is probably NYC or DC. Unlike many of her contemporaries, the handful of cities she chooses to play aren't within 3 hours of my house. In the past 4 or 5 years, the Rolling Stones, U2, Prince, Pearl Jam, and Bruce Springsteen have all graced my city at least once, most of them twice. I know for a fact that U2 sold out both shows, I'm almost positive that Bruce sold out, and that it was quite difficult to come by a ticket for the Stones or Pearl Jam.

I'm not sure why Madonna is any different than these other "name" acts. All of the aforementioned artists/bands have earned reputations for being consumate live performers (most of them even more-so than Madonna). Seemingly, these should be the artists who don't need to play every little corner of the country, yet they are the ones who swing through my neighborhood every time they release an album.

As large of a Madonna fan as I am, I wonder how many fewer sold-out shows she'd have had on her past excursions if she had come to more of America's larger cities. I find it a much greater accomplishment that U2 sold out Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinati than Maddy selling out MSG, Los Angeles, and Washington DC.

Madonna also doesn't spend as much time on the road as U2 or the Rolling Stones. So she's gonna hit the big cities and visit a few different countries and call it quits. She only tours for the summer.
I find it a great accomplishment Madonna is the only female artist at her age that can rake in the dough she does in such little time.

she is the only person who can rake in that much in that little time

Madonna's earning potential on the road is definitely amazing, but that doesn't help me any as a fan. Sorry to bring this point up again, but when I saw U2 in October, I paid $50 for a seat that ended up being front row. I'd imagine that it would be 6 times as much to get a comparable seat at a Madonna show. I reference U2 only because they have been around for about the same length of time as Maddy, and are still selling huge numbers of their albums (actually, probably a little more than Madge).

It's great that Madonna only played a fraction of the shows that U2 did and earned almost the same amount of money, but, frankly, the fact that U2 played more dates and charged less for their tickets speaks more to me as a fan than Madonna only touring for 3 months and charging a small fortune to see her show. I think if U2 only played for 3 months, they could probably also charge a hefty fee. All of the fans would be clamouring for a seat; same w/Springsteen. If he only played 15 cities total, I'm sure he could get away with charging $300 for a great seat.

Don't want this to come off like I'm bashing Madonna, or trying to start an argument with either one of you, but I have a larger admiration for these artists that are massive and still actively work to maintain their fanbases. Part of Madonna's appeal has always been that she's "larger than life", but then it's difficult to listen to her carry on about how empty fame and fortune is.

I love this post!!

I love Madonna as well but the deposits in her bank account are of no concern to me. I want to see a great show, a great performance. Though I will if I have to, I would like to not spend a small fortune for a few hours out. I give U2 huge props for keeping their prices relatively affordable (they did have some 165 dollar tickets) and I wish more artists would follow in suit. Showing respect and a little humility is never a bad thing, especially when talking about the ills of the world.

i agree that she should play more shows, but she doesn't. i think she likes to build some kind of mystery to her performances, more exclusive, and i think she gets tired of being on the road quickly.

And i think a lot of it has to do with her family. Her kids go through school in the fall and she doesn't want to be away on tour while they're learning.

And i can't believe how quickly this evolved into a U2 vs Madonna thread.
A woman i absolutely admire and a band whose frontman i absolutely despise.

LOL... But my dear Jay... Mads has never toured alot of cities. Not since the Virgin tour has her tour extended for any length of time.

Well i'm just quoting what she said on MTV.

Anyways i'm happy she only tours for so long. Tours get old really quick. Cher made me sick with her 3 year tour.

You can't hold Madonna down to one project for so long. She's always onto something else. Which is why i love her, i can never get bored of her.

I don't think this turned into a U2 vs Madonna thread at all, not unless you make it one in your own mind. If anything it turned into a cheap ticket with lots of dates vs. an expensive ticket with fewer dates. As a consumer, I'll take the former every time.

Only brought up U2 because I can't think of a more apt comparison. The Stones have been around for a lot longer than Madonna, their albums aren't received nearly as well, and their shows are nostalgia trips/greatest hits heavy. Pearl Jam is more of a fanbase group now, and Bruce Springsteen hasn't had a real hit single for 10 years. The point remains that no matter what you think of U2, they are as much of a musical institution as Madonna, and charge a fraction of what she does for tickets.

During the Vertigo tour, I bought my tickerts from the fan club and was rewarded not only with the inner circle seats, but also was right up against the rail. I was less than 5 feet away from the band. I spent probably 55 bucks including taxes and fees. I can only imagine what I would've paid at a Madonna show.

It's a shame that it's not easier to see Maddy. She was my first musical love at the tender age of 4. I've been into her since 1987, and really would like to see her show. However, I'd have to buy those seats, get a hotel room, miss classes and work, and drive 5+ hours. I shudder to think of the money I've laid out on Madonna merchandise over the years (buying everything on cassette, then replacing it on CD, movies, DVDs, books, replacing scratched/damaged stuff, etc...), but I can't justify spending near $700 to see a 2 hour show(not to mention my gripes with some of her setlists).

I've seen Janet Jackson 3 times, and while I don't think her shows would thrill me half as much as Madonna's, she's way more accessible. I think I was 9th row for her last tour and only paid about 70ish odd dollars. She always comes within at least 2.5 hours of my house. I mean, it's not like Pittsburgh is some cow pasture anyway.
I'm the first mammal to wear pants.

Well, for one thing,Madonna likes to keep her tours brief.Basically, she likes to tour for three months in the summertime while her children are out of school (the rumor is that this tour will start on May 21 and end in early September).I would love for her to take Cher's lead and stay on the road for over a year (lol) but it ain't gonna happen anytime soon. But I do feel sorry for the fans who live in places like Minnesota and Texas, places she hasn't played since the "Blond Ambition" tour in 1990.

I'm not that thrilled about Madonna's high ticket prices either, but in her defense, her shows must be really expensive for her to put on.She pulls out all the stops. Her concerts are big, theatrical extravaganzas with many dancers, props, lavish costumes, etc. It's a safe bet that she spends more on her tours than U2 or The Rolling Stones.I'm not excusing her for charging up to $300 a ticket, just trying to put things in perspective.

after listening to alot of Madonna music recently,I came up with a new setlist. It includes every song from the current album (except "Isaac") plus the two outtakes "Super Pop" and "Fighting Spirit".I also included several older songs, but not the "obvious" choices (no "Holiday" or "Music").I think this setlist makes alot of sense.

Get Together
Like It Or Not
Deeper and Deeper
Borderline
Future Lovers (video)

Physical Attraction
Angel
Live To Tell
Jump
How High
I Love New York (video)

Let It Will Be
Forbidden Love
Push
Super Pop
Justify My Love
Bad Girl

Where's The Party/Into The Groove
Like A Virgin
Sorry
Fighting Spirit
Keep It Together
Hung Up

hmmm

I don't think so, waaaayy to expensive. my wife went to see Depeche Mode last week. so no other concert for us for at least 3 years lol

seriously, I'd rather spend the money to catch up on some of her more recent albums, I don't know a lot from those... and when I go to a concert I wanna know every song played if possible

Hmmm...

I've seen Prince tours, Musicology comes to mind, where the majority (and sometimes all) of the set was the same. They were still great shows! I've seen U2 tours where the setlist was almost always identical and those shows were phenomenal! I've seen Broadway musicals that haven't changed...ever...and they were great!

Yeah, I guess i just don't see a problem with rehearsed shows. Even "spontaneous" shows are rehearsed over and over again in order to make the "spontanaity" look effortless.

I understand your point. I guess we hold different opinions in what we expect from a live show (i use this term loosely with regard to a madonna concert! meow!!). Prince live is different everytime. he may stick to a particular setlist but u can bet ya bottom dollar that he works them songs differently every night - breaking them down, ad-libbing, incoorporating other songs into them, improvising on whatever instrument he feels at the time. Even his interaction with the audience.

Im not saying a prince concert is better than a madonna concert. its all subjective. both serve there perpose. its just not my cup of tea. Enjoy it all who attend

I totally understand what you're saying. But it's important to realize that Madonna's shows are very big and theatrical....like a Broadway play. It's not your typical concert. The presentation(in addition to the actual music) is a big part of the show. This doesn't leave alot of room for spontaneity,or different setlists for each show. It's just the type of artist she is.

I've never seen Madonna live in concert, since her tickets have always been such a fortune in price. I might start saving up to see up tour with this album.

And I'm finding it absolutely hard to believe that Madonna's had 2 #1 videos on TRL within the last the last 3 months.

In 2000 she was having enough trouble staying on that countdown for a day.

My, how the times have changed. biggrin

nod

The COADF era has been a great time for Madonna and her fans.A kickass album, two bonus tracks,a world tour and who knows what else? Maybe a Live DVD? I'm ecstatic lol

Madonna takes a lot of flack for her ticket prices, and of course Id prefer them to be cheaper, and for her to do more shows, but i kind of understand it. Its totally different from what U2 do. If you look at the nature of each performance, Madonnas is a lot more co-ordinated, requires more planning and rehearsal, and is a lot more physical and mentally gruelling than it is for say Bono. For that reason alone she deserves a bigger pay off. factor into that the bigger tour crew, the dancers, the extra musicians and technicians her show will require, and you can begin to see why her tickets are more expensive.

I would complain if i paid the money and she was half arsed about it, but she goes beyond the expectations of professionalism. She dedicates herself completely to putting on a good show for her FANS, just watch both tour documentaries and you get an idea as to how draining the whole experience is for her.

Festival virgin Madonna coming to Coachella
Bruce Fessier
The Desert Sun
February 28, 2006

-----
INDIO - The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival received perhaps its most significant blessing Tuesday evening.

Madonna, popular music's premier goddess, announced she will join a lineup of cutting-edge alternative rock, hip-hop and electronica artists Sunday, April 30, in the large tent at the Empire Polo Club in Indio.

She'll follow electronica superstar Paul Oakenfold in the Sahara Tent, said Paul Tollett, head of the Los Angeles-based promoter, Goldenvoice, while Tool headlines on the main stage.

It not only makes the Sunday program at least as impressive as Saturday's lineup with Depeche Mode, Daft Punk and Franz Ferdinand, it gives this seventh annual festival perhaps its strongest electronica celebration, especially with the recent addition of Massive Attack to the Sunday festivities.

Tollett said he doesn't know what type of show Madonna will present, but she has returned to electronica-oriented dance music with her latest album, "Confessions on a Dance Floor."

Her recent popularity with club DJs, who have enjoyed widespread success with remixes of Madonna hits, indicates she may perform with a DJ.

Tollett said she will have "a bunch of people" with her on stage, but he wasn't sure if they would be dancers or musicians.

Madonna said in a statement, "I've never performed at a festival and I'm especially excited about playing at Coachella before I start my own tour."

The Coachella festival has grown into what many critics call the most important alternative festival in the world and a recently released documentary film made over several years shows moments of music history made there, including the reunion of The Pixies.

Madonna, 47, recently demonstrated her music industry clout by negotiating the opening position in the Grammy Awards ceremony after it had apparently been committed to the revitalized Mariah Carey.

Madonna has been one of the most revered and controversial performers in pop music history since signing with Sire Records in 1982. She crossed into superstardom territory with her 1984 recording of "Like A Virgin," written by Palm Springs High School graduate Billy Steinberg.

The Guinness Book of World Records called her the most successful female recording artist of all time in 2000 with 120 million records sold worldwide. Warner Bros., the parent company of Madonna's own Maverick label, said last year her international record sales had surpassed 200 million.

This will be her first performance in the Coachella Valley, and Tollett was excited about seeing her in a tent that will undoubtedly be the primary attraction of an event expected to draw about 50,000 people a day.

"Her current record ("Hung Up") is one of the most danced to records," he said. "To me, it makes so much sense for her to be in the dance tent."

Tollett wouldn't speculate on the capacity of the dance tent, but several thousand people spilled out of that tent to see a late announced performance by Beck in 2004.
