ELECTRIC PURGATORY screens in LA 
Electric Purgatory is a documentary that examines the struggles of black rock musicians and the industry's ambivalence towards them. Director Raymond Gayle spent the better part of a year traveling around the United States interviewing many of Black Rock's elite including Fishbone, Vernon Reid, Adam Falcon, Jimi Hazel and Cody Chesnutt. Distinguished journalists such as Flip Barnes, Darrell McNeil, Charlie Braxton, and Greg Tate, share their opinions and insight on the dilemma facing these artists. The film will explore the origins of the Black Rock Coalition and its relevance in the music industry. The project will also take a look at the stigma Black Rock musicians face in the Black community and more importantly how to bring the Black audiences back into the fold.

ELECTRIC PURGATORY screening review

It properly traces the roots of "black rock" from its blues beginnings and follows it thru early pioneers like Little Richard, Hendrix and Sly to more recent practioneers like Fishbone and Living Colour. The narrative is driven by prominent figures like Vernon Reid, Doug Pinnick, Jimi Hazel, Michael Hill, Angelo Moore and there are snatches of performances from Little Richard, Fishbone and Living Colour (the latter two from their Saturday Night Live spots). There's a lot of frustration expressed. Moore, of Fishbone, is dumbfounded how bands that followed their lead have come to represent the status quo. Jimi Hazel, 24-7 Spyz, echoes this sentiment. King's X frontman, Doug Pinnick acknowledges that business and profits were likely mismanaged, to his own detriment. In any case, these men and women are survivors, not victims. The audience attending was musicians and fans from the LA scene and the West Coast chapter of the Black Rock Coalition was present at the screeing. Executive Director West, Beverly Milner, worked with director Raymond Gayle in fielding questions from the audience and announced BRC will be reactivated soon (on both coasts). Director Gayle took time to acknowledge the attending musicians who appeared in the film and Angelo Moore read a Dr. Madd Vibe (his alter-ego) poem "Rock Star" to close the evening. There will be future screenings and a general release is planned. There's keen interest in Europe and Japan for foreign distribution and DVD plans would follow afterwards. More importantly, a call is made to Prince and Lenny Kravitz "to set egos aside" and headline an Ozzfest type of black rock event. I most certainly was. With the wife and kids. Great film. I'm glad to see that there's the possibility of a follow up film. As director Raymond Gayle said, there were many other groups that weren't included. It was also cool to see Spacey T and Tori Ruffin in attendance. Too bad more of L.A.'s supporters of Black Rock artists and music in general weren't there. I was very impressed at the number of females in the audience.

They had a NYC screening back in August of 2005 at The Knitting Factory.
