Ben Harper & the Innocent Criminals at El Rey 2/19 Bro turned out another excellent set at the El Rey last night. Played
2.5 hrs and featured new songs from his upcoming 2-disc BOTH SIDES OF THE GUN. Disc 1 being ballads and blues and Disc2 being funk tunes. This was the 2nd night of a sold-out stand to let his homies check his new offerings before he rolls out in Spring/Summer. No opener; just all BH&IC plus a small string section and Marc Ford, an Innocent Criminal when Black Crowes is idle, stopped by for a few tunes. In any case, Ben's backup band The Innocent Crimals is one of the best out there. Does anybody remember Leon Mobeley from Sesame Street and ZOOM? He's been the long-time percussionist. IC bassist Big Juan Nelson was on bass and broke out one of those upright electric NDS basses. Really, though, the whole band was tight. test

New songs were pretty tight. Lots of head-bobbin' funk and a couple of "cuddle-up" ballads. Lots of WGs in the house, so maybe the MRS.WASthere; I dunno. test
