Ok to me I LOVE the Beastie Boys. There music is Fun Fun Fun. I don't know alot about rap music so for those rap lovers out there would you mind explaing to me how three upper middle class Jewish boys were accepted by rap fans and other rappers as dope where so many other white rappers are considered fake, phoney and imitating and profiting off of black culture?

i think they really studied the culture and didn't try to use hip hop as a way to garner publicity through controversial stunts. they had a good sense of humor, they were light hearted, and at least after the first album, they wrote about some meaningful stuff. and their music was just plain good to dance and party to.

They were accepted because they made a couple of great rap albums with a great, well-known rap producer.

It does piss me off when I see people refer to Vanilla Ice as the first white rapper and Eminem as the first "credible" white rapper. I wonder why the Beastie Boys are constantly forgotten in that respect.

They were never fronting or trying to be something that they were not. Their frat boy ways also went by the wayside when they got more serious with their music. Which I'd say was on the 2nd album. I don't think the rap community (or anyone else) took them seriously until that point. They were also a novelty act until then.

If you guys wanna know the truth - They got into the rap game when it was still getting its feet so there was no "White Boys can't rap" stigma at the time. Now, had they come in around early to mid 90s with that style of rao they'd be immediately dissed. In fact, I STILL believe that they were trying to "mock" rap and then once they started getting love for their style they decided to go "legit" and act as if they were always down with rap from the jump. If you listen to their earlier records they're basically making fun of rappers and the rap genre.

In some ways, I think you're right. Their early rap tunes - especially Fight for Your Right - sound like a parody. I think they realized that maybe they weren't being taken seriously or that they looked kinda (I dunno) like wannabes and started to take the rap game more seriously. What always struck me sort of odd about them was their flip flop between rap and more punk-oriented stuff. Not bad, per se, just odd.

In the early years of hip hop you had your *thing* -- the elements which defined your style. The whole panache of Licensed to Ill was this snot-nosed New York whiteboy vibe, it was goofy, irreverent and over-the-top, but yet and still it was 100% THEM... and it BUMPED. Hip hoppers back then got *it*. It was a different climate in the '80s, the Beasties could get away with their style (as much as the Fat Boys could get away with their antics and still yield respect in certain circles). There was a fun element to them circa 1985-88 as well as with hip hop. They weren't on the roster of the Def Jam tour just because -- they had to be true to the craft. That's just how they rhymed in their earlier years.

Sure, they evolved later on with Paul's Boutique and succeeding LPs, but in my short remark I simply suggested that they were genuinely talented emcees who actually studied their craft and that resonated with hip hop audiences.
