Should Michael Jackson ever make a pop album again? i dont think he should.
imo. i just dont think michael wants 2 anymore... he's really made it very clear. He's told us he hates pop music (which makes no sense. that he want 2 make a pop album). that he doesnt have a clue whats going in the pop scene. He has contiunlesly said that he whats to write and direct movies, he's also mention he's always wanted to make clascial albums. I think the movie feild is pefect 4 this. i think it's his best way to express his art now. now not only can he make the movies but also do the scores for them, which would be classcial music. Even if he gets a kick to make a pop song. he can always put it out via the soundtrack. In th end he's artist, i just hope he does what he wants. what really for yeras now seems to be what i've just said is what he wants to do. i hope he doesnt feel obligated to the fans to make a pop album. I mean really he just didnt seem into invincible. yes sony is to blame for the promotion of the album. but they only get half the blame, michael gets' the other half. if he wanted to promto the album he would. he would have founded the 8 million dollar unbreakable video out of his own pocket like he did when cbs didnt want to pay for thriller. he would have got out there pefermed at award shows, snl, late night tv etc. but he didnt. Even in his protest against sony. he never once mention invincible, never said "go buy my album". It was us the fans (4 those who are) who said that. he never held one of the many buy invincible banners up. he only held the "sony sucks" and "mottola is the devil" and many others up. He also often said this is not abou me. I just want him to do what he wants. cause if that's the case. It's a win win situaiton if he does what he really wants then we get something really great and different in return. To quote michael himself "an artist should never try to please thier fans"

To tell you the truth, I don't want him to do a pop album. I really want him to do film. I'd also love to hear him try his hand at orchestral music. Every heard Childhood (Theme from Free Willy 2)? That is one of the best things Michael Jackson has ever done. Move in that direction and fuck this "King of Pop" crap.

Right On! Michael always mentions that song. you can tell he's proud of that song. You dont hear him saying how much he loves "you rock my world" I love that song it's beautiful.

When did he say he hated pop music, was it before or after invincible? When I listened to invincible, it seemed like it was done half assed anyway and I kind of felt as though he didn't care much about it.

It was about 1999. He said Invincible would be his last pop album.

There has already been hints at a comeback. That Bahrainy prince stated he's been in the studio recording a lot more than just "I have this dream" then in a recent press release stated that "this was the raindrop before then thunderstorm".
I think Mike is ready for a comeback and i think we'll start hearing about it by summer.

I think he should either retire and come out and do a show once in a while OR he should do a Vegas show like Celine Dione. I'd prefer he did the latter.
Anyway, why does the King of Pop now, hate Pop music? It's actually kind of funny.

To quote michael himself "an artist should never try to please thier fans" when did he say that? not that I would not like this quote, but i can´t remember him ever saying that and I think I´ve read, heard or seen most of his interviews. "When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really don´t like the idea that he could have it all."

Basically, Michael Jackson has been doing bubblegum pop for 40 years and is sick and tired of it. I hope he moves to more classically inspired music. I think Mike has some great stuff planned. Personally, I think he has another pop album left in him. He's not gonna leave the pop industry with Invincible as his latest release. He's going to try to redeem himself, for sure.

Starting? Why limit it to pop album? Will he ever make any kinda album again? I think his recording days are gone (at least the days of enough people buying his albums to make it a hit).

I think MJ has always had a "distaste" for pop music; he just sold his soul to the pop machine upon making and after "Thriller" because he's so obsessed with commercial appeal/popularity/sales. This is evident in how "Thriller" sounds so contrivedly perfected and polished in comparison to "Off The Wall", how "Bad" sounds so desperate to compete with its predecessor, and how "Dangerous", "HIStory", and "Invincible" have all these 'hot' producers' names attached to them.
I do NOT think he should serve up another overcooked pop album like he's been doing for the past 20 years. "Bad", "Dangerous", and so forth all had their moments of pure artistry... why not just make a FULL album of pure artistry? NO hot producers? NO banging, sterile drums and synthesizers? NO repeated lyrical themes? NO ego and patronization? NO self-conscious vocal hiccups? FOR ONCE?!

HIStory was produced my MJmostly and it was fantastic - that was an album of pure artistry. U Prince fans are so critical of MJ....Prince has NOT made anything "groundbreaking" in YEARS !!!!! I'll admit Invincible was over produced. Michael should do whatever the hell he likes.....he doesnt need to listen to bird brain critics who think they have any clue of his potential power or his art. Yeah, an album of pure artistry that had producers/guest stars-of-the-minute Jam & Lewis, Dallas Austin, Notorious B.I.G., and Shaquille O'Neal.

No hes too old, and his reputation is in tatters, also Invicible sounded a lot like a weak imitation of the Urban R and B music on the market at the time.
Theyt should melt him down and make plastic toys so children can play with him for a change. 17 Years ago I made a commitment to Prince

I have to semi agree with the above. I totally want Michael to do music that matters to him, because that is what interests me. I thought HIStory (Disc 2) and BOTDF were some of the most personal, private and amazing songs he has done to date. I'd love to see him walk in that direction. The chasing "Thriller" days need to be done and behind him. I wish Michael would mature a bit and write about what matters to him. He is Michael Jackson, if the label won't let him write about personal stuff, then screw em! There has got to be a label somewhere that will let him do things on his own terms, and if not, he should make his own label. And if doing things on his terms is to "chase Thriller" then I hope he releases some B-Sides along the way, I personally thought some of the B-Sides/Demos on "The Ultimate Collection" were much better than tons of the "completed" songs on "Invincible." (And I did like "Invincible" for the record, just thought there was some filler on it.) As for classical music, if his heart desires to do that, I suppose I'd dig it, cus in this situation, it would be what he wants to do. However, I'd perfer more personal stuff with vocals on top of it. But that is just a matter of taste I suppose. Speaking of taste, I'd love to see Paul Oakenfold produce Michael's next disc, that would be amazing in my book! Either way..great thread and great posts guys! [Edited 2/21/06 18:37pm]

It would kewl to see him work with Quincy or Phil Ramone and make an adult CD. I don't mean like adult contemporary but do like Sinatra and Streisand and sing about where you are in life at that age.

I can't believe some Prince fans are doubting MJ's ability to sell an album. Invincible sold 8 million. Prince hasn't sold 8 million or more copies of an album since Diamonds & Pearls. Since 1994, he's been selling 2 million copies or less of each album. Michael Jackson has sold more than twice as much as Prince since 1979 and Michael has released 7 albums in the same time Prince has released 30+. It's unjustified that a Prince fan would question Michael Jackson's ability to sell records. You guys will be eating your words when Michael Jackson returns to the music scene.
