about Kanye

Why is it that Kanye West gets so much slack for sampling when the golden age of Hip Hop was built on samples? Also anybody can sample true.. But not everybody has an ear to sample in creative ways. For example Puffy or "P Diddy" or whatever would pretty much talk over the record, as it was originally produced. But take a record like Public Enemy's It takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back or Liquid Swords from GZA where the sampling is done in more creative ways. Kanye tends to lean more towards the latter example most of the time.

Kanye's stuff is more subtly chopped than most listeners pick up on.

People are usually referring to him stealing choruses as his own hooks ("Through The Fire" "Diamonds Are Forever").

Kanye gets alot of flak just because hes Kanye. Hes a big target because he says whatever he wants and the media and the rest of the sheep dont like it. He says alot of stuff just to get a reaction, and yeah alot of what he says is bullshit. Anything that he does is gonna seem amplified 10x more than the next guy who does it. Hes become more of a character than an artist.

People are thinking, "man, he aint that nice"... "all he does is sample other peoples $hit."

Yeah, everyone does it, but he sticks out like a sore thumb. shrug

I definitely agree with you. Unfortunately, it's that attitude that's gonna bite him in the ass if he doesn't get a grip. The 80s and the 90s are over and today's music consumer is too fickle to keep up with those kinds of publicity stunts and see the real reason behind them. Kanye is a real talented dude, but all that talent's starting to take a back seat to the ego.

I can see how his attitude can cost him some points from time to time. I guess as a musician I am used to judging people on musical terms alone. I mean nobody ever attacked Beck for sampling but I can see how a persons off stage persona can effect listeners. But I will give Kanye his propers for touching issues that other over emasculated rappers wont touch.

So do I. It takes balls to put yourself out there and talk about politics, homosexuality, and black social issues when whats envouge is anything but. I'll give him his due on that.
