"High On Your Love/Suite" by Rick James (1979)---one of his singles that is completely forgotten. It never even appears on the numerous hits compilations.

Actually David, High On Your Love Suite does appear on one Rick James compilation, namely The Ultimate Collection

Thanks for the heads-up!

Vainandy and DavidEye: You guys overwhelm me. Where does one begin to find these songs? I have a few of them, but are there any decent compilations that anybody could recommend?

A good place to start would be the "Phat Trax" CDs on Rhino Records. There are seven volumes and there are some really rare jams on these CDs ("Bon Bon Vie","Sun Is Here","Thighs High","Ridin' High",even The Time's "777-9311" and Jesse Johnson's "Free World"!)

You may also wanna check out the "Old School" CDs from Thump Records.I have volumes 1-5,but I think they have released many more volumes by now.You will find jams like "Pop It" by One Way,"I've Just Begun To Love You" by Dynasty,"Backstrokin" by Fatback,"So Fine" by Howard Johnson and many other jams that aren't always easy to find.

Donald Byrd's "Love Has Come Around" is a favorite of mine, but can you believe that I haven't heard it since 1981??!! I gotta find that song NOW!! mad

Wow! Are you kidding? I just played that song last week! It took me three years to find that song and who sang it. Back in 1998 my local radio station did a funk megamix and Donald's song started the megamix. I really liked the song so much but of course the DJ never name all the artists and songs on the megamixes. But unfortinutely at the time I didnt know who sing the song. Then three years, as I was downloading all the funk songs that I like, by accident I discovered Love has come around as I was going through my funk list that I needed to download. So at least I am happy. biggrin

I'm gonna go to a used record store and try to find it on vinyl.I love that song!!!!! music

Thanks.

David Eye listed the best place to start with "Phat Trax". Be sure and get all seven volumes. These volumes contain the full length album versions and 12 Inch versions of these songs.

These are really great also.....

I don't know how many volumes there are of that particular compilation but each one is a two disc set with full length album and 12 Inch versions.

When I go to the record store, I start at the beginning of the compilation section and work my way to the end of it browsing and constantly looking for something I don't have.

If you have a particular artist in mind, look for a greatest hits CD on them. If you see a particular actual album that you like by that artist, buy it immediately because it may never be there again when you come back for it later.

Also, there are tons of jams out there that have never been released on CD so get yourself a turntable and check the used record stores for vinyl. Fortunately, I kept all my vinyl from back in the day. I still look for more though.

"All Night Thing" by Invisible Man's Band (1980)

"Lady's Wild" by ConFunkShun (1980)

"High" by Skyy (1980)

"Walk The Streets" by Dreamboy (1983)---very Minneapolis Sound-influenced

"K-I-S-S-I-N-G" by Sexual Harassment (1983)---everyone knows about their underground hit "I Need A Freak",but this song is even funkier

"Push" by One Way (1981)

"Heartbeat" by Taana Gardner (1981)

"Heartbeats" by Yarbrough and Peoples (1983)

"Quick,Slick" by Syreeta (1981)

"S.O.S. (Dit,dit,dit,dash,dash,dash)" by SOS Band (1980)

"Mechanical Emotion" by Vanity with Morris Day (1984)---a hot slice of Minneapolis funk

"Do It Now" by SOS Band (1981)---yes,it does sound a little too much like "Take Your Time",but it's still a hot groove lol

"Sonya" by Tierra (1983)

"After You" by Bernard Wright (1986)

"Last Night" by Stephanie Mills (1982)---Stephanie got a little funky here! A surprise, considering that she was more into ballads and slower jams.

"Let Me Let You Rock You" by Sue Ann Carwell (1981)---yes,this is the same Sue Ann Carwell who worked with Prince in his early years

"You Make Me Wanna Dance" by Andre Cymone (1983)

"Lost In Music" by Sister Sledge (1979)

"Rescue Me" by A Taste Of Honey (1980)

"You Should Do It" by Peter Brown (1978)

"Girl Calling" by Chocolate Milk (1978)---Immature sampled this song on their 1995 single "We Got It"

"I Love You" by Donna Summer (1977)---how ironic that "I Feel Love"---a song that doesn't really showcase Donna's amazing vocal abilities---became a smash hit, while the superior "I Love You" (which features Donna singing her heart out) stalled on the charts and barely made the Top 40 confuse
