Beck "Runners Dial Zero"

snowflake

ok, so in seventeen years worth of listening to music,
i've found the 4th song to make me cry like a child...

absolutely amazing song. it's like someone takes some
of your most hurtful memories and projects them onto a
big screen n says "here, deal with it, start to heal".

bow

i've always loved Beck's music, but somehow missed out
on this track (it appears to be a mutations bonus cut)

but now Beck has risen to the heights of Prince for me

sad And now I want it because I love Beck. If it sounds anything like something from Sea Change, then I'd be in heaven. nod

Several years ago I was burning down an orange glow to this track and others on Mutations, regularly... these days I've stopped that habit, but this track is just another testament to the great talent Beck can conjure at times.

tracks on various versions if i recall correct. some of
them had 2 tracks and other 1 or all 3.

Mutations is my favorite album of Beck.

My copy is sadly quite skippy so I might do well to track down the import edition.

Beck is great musically but I have problem with his Scientology (we are all basically a multitude of alien souls attached to human bodies called thetans and yet we must rid ourselves of these thetans?) belief.

One afternoon I layed down for a little sleep. Put on Mutations and let it run. Little did I know that I'd wake up in time for 'Runners dial zero' and would think that I'd died or something. Seriously, that was the first time I ever really heard that song and together with the golden autumn light that came through my window and being sleepy, it scared the living daylights out of me.
Has to be the most depressing sounding song I know, besides Bowie's 'Heathen' (the title track).

On most versions of Mutations, "Diamond Bollocks", the song before "Runners Dial Zero", signifies the new direction Beck will lead us in with his next album, Midnite Vultures.

But "Runners Dial Zero" is apparently a bookend to all that came before; at least partly a comment on some of the darker aspects of the grunge era:

"By the dried up stream, we slit our throats and dreamed..."

His future Midnite Vultures was mostly brightly contrasting funk and collage in comparison... distinctly opposed to the Beck of old and the angstier tendencies of 90s rock and the low-key elements of Mutations.

One album later though and he was upset again on Sea Change... just shows how varied Beck's work is. I think he is one of the two most important artists of his generation, the other being Kurt Cobain.

Ship in The Bottle

When I called you in the morning
You were struggling for sense
You were journeying through memories so vicious
You made all your dying wishes
Come true

But I know you're gonna try
To live without love by and by
But that's not living
That's just time going by
Going by, my love

Another ship in the bottle
Has got no place to sail
To see the waves getting darker every hour
The stars have lost their power
In the sky

But I know you're gonna try
To live without love by and by
But that's not livin'
That's just time going by
Going by, my love

love

i love those lyrics. i have to hear this song.
