Just checked on Yahoo Music Engine, and they've got it. Listening now. Other than the fact that Donald's voice has - obviously - aged some, you're right. Classic Dan sound. On initial listen, I'm struck by the vocals and horns. I like it a lot. [Edited 2/22/06 13:14pm]

Big time Steely Fan. Have all of their albums from the 70's. "Reeling In The Years" is my favorite from them. Great guitar leads and the lyrics are killing. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

I cannot tell a lie, bitches! I confess - at one point in time, I dismissed them entirely. Only because I didn't really know their music. I would write them off and swear up and down that I didn't like their music. My boyfriend had a greatest hits and was playing something by them and I said I liked it. "Um, it's Steely Dan. Remember how you don't like them?" Then another song I like. "Yeah, it's another Steely Dan song." I used to make fun of his ass for liking Steely Dan, calling him an old man and crap. "Are you gonna get their new album? It won some crappy ass Grammy cuz they're old." I used to be a lot more dismissive in my youth.

I always thought that one of the most interesting things is how their music seems deceptively smooth and pleasant (but very hard to play), but then they top it off with some of the most subversive lyrics -- From I Got The News: "Slow down, I'll tell you when, I may never walk again..." then again, it IS a band named after a dildo, so..... .... Excellent, excellent point. This is one of the things i've always like about them. The subversively smooth groovy music and then you actually hear the lyrics they're juxtaposed against. One of the more obvious examples... COUSIN DUPREE Well I've kicked around a lot since high school I've worked a lot of nowhere gigs From keyboard man in a rock'n ska band To haulin' boss crude in the big rigs Now I've come back home to plan my next move From the comfort of my Aunt Faye's couch When I see my little cousin Janine walk in All I could say was ow-ow-ouch ~~~~~ I'll teach you everything I know If you teach me how to do that dance Life is short and quid pro quo And what's so strange about a down-home family romance? tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. Another trait is the purposely ambiguousness of certain scenarios that lend itself to different interpretations on subsequent listenings.
This is one reason that I absolutely hate videos. To me they have a tendency to stop your mind from creating unique visions of tunes. Even H-Gang has this trait. I hear Denise is back on the outside. That she's got a wicked plan She's callin' in the Gone(?) Sisters again To form the ultimate 5-chord band For eight months now in that freaking cell She's been knockin' ideas around Now she's good and ready to make a big noise But here in her own home town And even though he specifies a freaking cell, what's she on the outside of? A jail? The loony bin? Her own mind? tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 [Edited 2/22/06 17:18pm] "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

That's the odd thing about Steely Dan and what made it hard for me personally to distinguish which songs of theirs I liked. The titles of the songs aren't instantly recognizable by a catch line in the chorus.

I just hated most of the classic rock dudes I went to high school with, and that song seemed like their anthem in a retro kind of way. Only years later did I realize how great it was, and how twisted and great the lyrics were.

She just about lost it when I started to listen to them a lot, and she said, "Since when do you love Steely Dan? " Since then, whenever I can, I bombard her with their music.
