Greatest Guitar PLayers of all Time......

To relate this topic to the one discussing whether Prince is the greatest Guitar Player of all time.

I thought it may be a good idea to create this topic and list peoples favourite Guitarists. That way it will create a sort of library for some of us who haven't heard or 'forgotten' about some of these musicians.

There are thousands of Guitrists out there in the big world of music. So come on and place your faves.

I will start the post with 5 .....Not in any order.....

1. David Gilmour
2. Gary Moore
3. Joe Stariani
4. Michael Hedges
5. Al Di Meola

My pick (with a short explanation why)

Nick Drake - Best acoustic guitarist (tip: cello song on his debut Five Leaves Left)

David Hidalgo (los lobos) - great, very underrated when it comes to his solo's
(listen to 'just a man' on their album Kiko for example)

Richard Thompson - when it comes to intuitive, soulfull improvisation

Peter Buck (REM) - Technically limited, but within his limitations creating the best jangles a janglerock-lover could wish (maybe i should thank Robert McQuin from the Byrds for this)

Ty Tabor (King''s X) - for creating these beautifull lowtoned riffs (try out their cd 'Gretchen goes Nebraska').

Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine) - Best funk-rock guitarist (way more sober and sharp as Vernon Reid from Living Colour, and therefore more effective in my opinion)

Prince - 'soundwise', when it comes to opened jaw-effect he creates (not always something to like though, sometimes he has the tendencies to play solo's that are far too long to be effective, or he is just showing off for the showing off)

Some of my favorites:

Jimi Hendrix--The Obvious One.

Robert Johnson--not a soloist, but sounded like at least two guys at once.

Eddie Van Halen--I think he's surprisingly underrated these days. He started a revolution.

Steve Vai--dismissed as a big bag-o-tricks & Van Halen sub-set, he's an amazing composer, arranger as well as perhaps the most accomplished fret man ever to rock.

Jeff Beck--The superstar you never hear on the radio, he's supremely tasteful & versatile.

Charlie Christian--The Hendrix of jazz

Stevie Ray Vaughn--Not a great innovator, but maybe the most beautiful tones of anyone. Also, nobody ever needed to question his legitimacy like, say, Jack White. It was obvious he was for real.

Cool !!

Some really intelligent comments.....

Robert Johnson comes up a couple of times, which is excellent.

Nice to see that I am not alone in appreciation of Michael Hedges - for those of you not familiar I suggest listening to his sounds.....He truly was a fantastic musician.

A little concerned about madonna !!!!! lol.....

Stevie Ray Vaughan rocked !!! I love his sound....real twangy

David Hidalgo (los lobos) Is this the dude out of the movies Desperado and Dusk Til Dawn ??? They are a cool sound too.

I will certainly check out some of the other names I havent heard of like Jimi Hazel etc.....

I love Guitar music....Used to have Van Halen / Vai and Satch etc.....real airhead back in the day cool

Thanks so far for keeping it cool in this post....Lookin forward to more suggestions.....
