so MJ chooses to play the race card...just like so many others choose to make controversial declarations (Ellen Degeneres-"i got cancelled because i'm a lesbian." no, you got cancelled because your show's not funny, see also Margaret Cho, Steve Harvey...) MJ needs to realize the 80's are over and he hasn't changed with the times. Madonna figured it out, MJ can't. but then Madonna's not spending $60 million to make a crap record... How cam you compare Michael and Madonna? Madonna has sold her soul. Her songs are made for Kids (8-15). These people just want to make money. For money they would sell everyhing. M. Jackson is a genius, Madonna is just a singer with no respect for the art. Prince and Michael don't need to change. They don't have to follow trends. No serious artist follows trends. Exactly what do you know about what anyone, except for yourself, has respect for? Also, one can easily be a "serious artist" (I guess this excludes comedians and stiatists?) and follow trends. What you are talking about is someone who is "trendsetter", but plenty of great art has been created following a trend or style. test

Al Sharpton himself thinks Jackson lost it...
___ http://www.nypost.com/new.../51968.htm JACKO GOT OFF-TRACKO, REV. AL SAYS By JEANE MacINTOSH --- DISS-PUTED: The Rev. Al Sharpton says Sony honcho Tommy Mottola is no racist. July 8, 2002 -- The Rev. Al Sharpton yesterday said Wacko Jacko's bizarre attack on Tommy Mottola was unfair and unfounded, and called the Sony honcho a staunch supporter of black artists. "I have known Tommy for 15 or 20 years, and never once have I known him to say or do anything that would be considered racist," Sharpton said. An uneasy Sharpton admitted he was "taken aback and surprised" by the verbal assault, which started during a press conference with the rotund reverend and lasted throughout the Gloved One's crosstown tour on Saturday. "In fact, he's always been supportive of the black music industry," Sharpton said. "He was the first record executive to step up and offer to help us with respect to corporate accountability, when it comes to black music issues." At times during his anti-Mottola diatribe, Jackson held up posters of Mottola with horns, and called him "devilish." He also accused Mottola of describing another black artist with a racial slur. Sharpton said he was "inundated" with calls yesterday from top African-American artists and producers furious over Jackson's nasty personal attack on the Sony heavyweight. "To call Tommy Mottola a racist is just ridiculous - he's one of the biggest supporters of black music I know," said producer Steve Stout, one of several angry black execs who rang Sharpton. Sharpton stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Jackson at the reverend's Harlem headquarters Saturday, getting a big smooch from the one-time King of Pop as he started his crosstown tour to denounce Mottola and Sony. Along his Harlem-East Village-Midtown route, Jackson also lashed out at the industry at large, saying execs "really do conspire against black artists." "I didn't know that Michael planned to personally attack Tommy - but nobody tells Michael Jackson what to do," Sharpton said, adding that he "stands firmly behind" Jackson's view on the industry overall. The Jackson spectacle was timed to coincide with Sharpton's big racism-in-music "summit" tomorrow. Sharpton says he intends to keep "Michael's personal issues with Tommy" separate from the "broader industry issues" at the meeting. But Jackson's personal swipes may have torpedoed any constructive developments, as black artists line up to defend the Sony boss. "Michael Jackson playing the race card is a cop-out - a last-resort move by a guy who is frustrated that his big project didn't work," said Courey Rooney, the African-American producer of Jennifer Lopez, Destiny's Child and Marc Anthony. As a kid, Rooney said, he "idolized Jackson" and worked on part of Jackson's failed "Invincible" album - the record at the heart of Jackson's beef with Sony. The record company poured $60 million into producing and promoting it, but Jackson contends the company didn't back him enough. Rooney believes Michael Jackson's checkered past - especially his pedophilia charges - played a huge role in the record's lousy sales.

i got this off from a forum:
quote: --- Originally posted by: The_Dance I werent going to post this, as ive noticed the negative energy at the board. But i had to make my opinion clear and heard. I cannot believe Michael Jackson the man whom i admire and love music and persona wise is accusing Sony Music, Mottola in particular of being a racist the hypocricy, irony and contradiction is too much for me to bare!!! When Thriller was selling 40 million copies in the 80's he didnt accuse them of racism then did he??? I dont get this at all. Now that his Invincible album hasnt sold as much he points the finger? Okay fair enough, i accept and appreciate Sony have not given Invincible the promotion. And that its probably due to MJ wanting to leave Sony with half of the Sony/ATV catalogue. I have no qualms with this at all, but when he starts whinging about Racism it makes him look so foolish and upsets me beyond belief They offered him the biggest recording contract in the history of music, they propelled his career, he was at the forefront. U cannot deny that Sony made Michael Jackson a superstar. Its give and take. The partnership between the two worked superbly through-out the years untill now. I wish he would stop going public with these childish accusations. I know that many of you may think oh here we go again but i feel everything i have mentioned has atleast some validity! I still love his music to peices...but all this drama is uneccessary...What is he hoping to achieve? Everyone can see except for him , that its backfiring. -Upset --- I agree with alot of what you said and(after deeper investigation) I too am very suspicious about MJ's true motives, That even I now question. But he never said Sony was racist(FOX news interview) he specifically said Tommy Motolla(who was NOT at Sony during Thriller, Bad) was racist and that blacks are an institution in the music industry. The claim is valid look at the black stars that have went bankrupt(this is a systematic practice) Sammy Davis jr Billie Holliday Josephine Baker Louis Armstrong Ella Fitzgerald Paul Robeson Donna Summer Anita Baker Envogue Melba Moore TLC MC Hammer Tony Brackston Run DMC Mahalia Jackson Dion Worewick Chuck Berry Fat's Domino This is not all but its is too many. Yet LESS talentless people like Nsync Britney Spears Madonna Kylie Eminem Elvis seem to be always making so much money and get more "props" than black artist on average while ONLY MJ makes more. Even if POLITICS is MJ's motive I support his efforts to say something about the lack of a recording artist union and to focus on blacks not in UPPER MANAGEMENT nor in any OWNERSHIP positions either. THIS IS A VALID CONCERN AND SHOULD NEVER BE OVERLOOKED just because it is MJ doing the talking. If Madonna(who also supports artist protections) would have made a speech, named names and even mentioned racism and sexism in the industry would anyone or even the press do anything but cheer.Blacks have created nearly the entire pop genre yet ARE NOT AT THE TOP! Yes, there is a problem and it's not with what MJ is saying. EXAMPLE : If blacks had after 300 years of "taking over the world" control virtually every political, economic, educational, labor, law, and entertainment industry, which is the legacy from this history and is (for this exanple)reality, then... If we say that Whites excel in the computer industry... AND... Bill Gates (the most famous white progarmme maker) then creats Microsoft Windows yet "some black boss of the business makes the decisions and Bill speaks up about how whites who are the major generator of BILLIONS of dollars of profits yet have no one managing nor owning a single company in the technology field , would he then be told to "get a phucking grip!" Like I said I am dubious of his motivating reasons behind this but the issue is JUST AND NEEDED! http://extratv.warnerbros...7_08c.html extr a.com The reverend Al Sharpton, who appeared to be behind Michael Jackson every step of the way over the weekend, later reportedly distanced himself from Jackson’s attack on Mottola. But Shartpon tells "Extra" that he still stands shoulder-to-shoulder with Jackson on this issue. Sharpton says, "It's funny to me. When Michael Jackson came to Harlem six weeks ago as the headliner for the democratic parties fundraiser with Bill Clinton, he was an icon. When he comes back and talks about racism, he's wacko Jackson. I think he's an icon for doing what he did."

what mj should have done:
Instead of accusing TM of being racist Michael should adress more important issues. He should announce that he is leaving Sony. I know he did that in the demo in London but there was no press there and only the fans knew about it. There was very little press coverage of this. He should denounce that Sony didn't promote Invincible properly because they knew he was leaving them and keeping half of their ATV Music publishing which could cause serious problems to Sony and their board. Most important he should clearly deny that he is in debt with Sony. He should clarify that he is in good financial situation. Loud and clear. He should denounce that Sony are spreading rumours about his financial situation in an effort to undermine his future career and a possible deal with a new label. It's not the first time Sony has done this. They did it to Mariah Carey. And above all he should start looking for a new record company.
