To a lot of people, Miles Davis IS jazz. While jazz is way too expansive and has too rich a history to be defined by one person, in this jazz listener's (limited) view, Miles' sound and the breadth of his work puts him above most of the many greats in the genre.

Any jazzophile could go on all day about this.

Miles and his influence transcend "jazz". He single-handedly changed music about 4 or 5 times. I believe the overall affect he's had goes beyond one genre and carries over into the many facets of popular music we hear today.
