Some of my favs:

Forget me nots -the double time riff in the chorus

Bowie ashes to ashes

Jeffrey Osbourne . stay with me

Genesis No reply at all

RHCP. Prtety little ditty

anything by Vic Wooten or Robert Trujillo on the infectios grooves.

Most Talking heads have great lines.

ALso BNL bassist Jim Creegan has played some tremendous lines.

Brothers Johnson. stomp. the muted slap part

Prince. 777-9311. a very difficult and slinky line.

Pino Palldino fretless on everytime you go Paul Young

'Only A Northern Song' by The Beatles. The bass-line is insane. Turn down your treble to get the full effect. It's trippy.

not unlogically many of you name funktracks, but also in guitarrock / pop there are some bassists with 'class'.

My favorites in that type of music are:
- Paul McCartney (the Beatles) - very melodic (more funky on 'come together')
- Mike Mills (REM) - especially on the earlier records of REM he defined their sound, at one time playing melodies (and following the singer) at other times 'riffing' (following the drummer), both during the course of one song (listen to 'laughing' from murmur, 'Orange Crush' from Green and 'Take the Rain' from Reveal)
