The Chess Label

Wow...

The Chess Story is awfully wicked. I am playing it all of the time.

Who is your favourite Chess artist and why?

To me, the lady singers are the best; Mitzi Mars is rocking my world now... on the earlier compilations, woman singers are still a novelty and a welcome change from the many male voices...

Howlin Wolf, Willie Dixon and Muddy Waters in that order. Bo Diddley, Maurice White, Chuck Berry and too many more to mention.

If you ever get the chance there's several dvd's called American Folk and Blues (1, 2, 3, 4) or something along those lines, that show most of the Chess artists in Europe in the mid 60's on stages with various sets behind them. They are amazing to actually see these masters doin their thing.

OMG!!! Somebody dropped Sonny Boy's name on the org!! omg

i can't say enough about Sonny Boy or the majority of their artists. this label is where the early incarnations of funk were formed. nod Some aficionados have traced the first bass slap to Willie Dixon. i believe my main man, Howlin' Wolf was on their label for a while.

Check this out, we have a radio station here that was owned by the Chess label and all they use to do was bump artist of their label, how cool is that? a bit corrupt, but i wouldn't have complained. lol
