"People Are People" was released as a single in April '84, and then on Some Great Reward later in the year. I'm the first mammal to wear pants.

So no demos of this song appeared before 1984, right? I've been reading a 1980 or 1981 date on some websites...

As far as I know, parts of the song were recorded during the sessions for 'Construction Time Again' in 1983. The song was released as a stand-alone single in April, the USA got the 'People Are People' LP soon after, and then it was put on 'Some Great Reward' later in the year.
In 1980, Depeche hadn't even had an album out. Vince Clark was still the principal songwriter, and Alan Wilder hadn't joined the band. The song is not a bubby synth-pop cut a'la 'Just Can't Get Enough' or 'See You', so I'm assuming that Clark had nothing to do with it. I'm the first mammal to wear pants.

Maybe the 1981 dates refer to the compilation album 'People Are People', which had songs from the 1981 'Speak and Spell' album on it. I'm the first mammal to wear pants.
