GCS's 1st LP is killin'. One of my fave funk ballads is "Munchies For Your Love" by Bootsy. And there's way too many funk bands I love..Couldn't list just one. DAG was a great funk band in the 90's. They sounded like Sly, Marvin, Curtis and Prince (and these cats were white..they knew how to get down).

i watched the commercial for "Funkentelechy" on youtube.com headbang

That is a great album

My personal favorite on that album is "The Placebo Syndrome"
How in the world did GC come up with that weird ass tune? It has funk, a latin tinge experimental and even a tinge of waltz to me in it.
Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.

How on earth do you know about Freedom? That was a local band in my city that had jams like "Get Up And Dance", "At The Party", and "Whodat". You get major points for knowing about this group. They were known for their kazoos. Grandmaster Flash's "Freedom" featured them. I don't know how the hell Grandmaster Flash heard of Freedom though. Maybe they went national?

- BOBBY NUNN
- EBONEE WEBB

Two great ones with that "Prince" sound. Ebonee Webb's sound was a dead ringer for Prince. They sounded more like Prince than he did. lol

Is that the same Glass that did "Bedrock"?

Great slow jam that everyone always forgets...."Too Lonely To Be Alone".

- NEW HORIZONS

"You can do your thing, anything you choose....leave, leave, leave my thing alone".

Great group produced by Roger Troutman.

- STARPOINT ( the early years )

Everyone always remembers them for "Object Of My Desire" but my favorite is "Keep On It" from 1981 when they were on Chocolate City Records.

I was wondering if somebody would remember that Kool and the Gang were funky as hell before they went crossover. lol

I love Sly, Lakeside, Cameo, Ohio Players, etc, but strictly talking funk I'll say Pfunk. The number one song for me will always be One Nation.

My favorite band, WAR, is harder to classify because they did a little bit of everything. I love the hell outta them guys.
Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

Hey vainandy ,
Thanx 4 your rap .

Yeah man , i was freekin'out when i heard this track from 1982.

I already had these albums , which are from 1981 and 1984
.
I then started right away searching for a possible 1982 album .
I guess "Whodat" was an in-between-albums production .

This is another Freedom album i want to add to my collection .

Is the Malaco-Label also based in your area ?
There were some solid productions released by that company , like from the group POWER .
They had a flaming jam called "HOTT" , on their self-titled album from 1982 .

The album of POWER and a "Best Of" from FREEDOM were released on CD in Japan .
The Label is P-VINE which re-issues all kind of rare funk albums :
http://www.p-vine.com/app...n/gid/3018

The re-issues though , are released on a limited base .
So eBay would be another option to search for them .

Flash , Afrika Bambaataa & Kool Herc from NYC were fanatic dj's who already sampled in the 70's all kinda stuff from pop to classical . I guess they must have been fanatic collectors too .
If Freedom-releases could reach the European borders , they shure must have been spread over the USA ? confuse thumbs up!

The synths all over Bobby's albums were tight .
For instance , "Sex Maniac" , from his 1983 album , has a nasty vocal+synth-bridge during the track

Assisted by his brother Billy Nunn , producer Winston Monesque and accompanied by the brass-section of OZONE .
Bobby and Billy used to have their earlier 70's group SPLENDOR , produced by Philip Bailey .
Bobby produced lately for female Philippine-singer Jhing at www.jhing.com
Billy lately plays in the STONE CITY BAND .

The falcetto's on Bobby's & Ebonee's albums are indeed very present .
The album above again got freaky jams , with some Bar-Kays flavour too , as this was produced by the late Bar-Kays producer Allen A. Jones .
The sleeve-photo has the same atmosphere as the 1984 album by Freedom .

vainandy said:

- GLASS featuring JOHN WILLIAMS
Is that the same Glass that did "Bedrock"?

Straight out yeah ,
Man , this is in my TOP-list of 80's funk .
The synths are furiously raw , including serious funk-bass .
Released in 1983 on the independent HCRC label , located in Houston/Texas .

Great slow jam that everyone always forgets...."Too Lonely To Be Alone"

I didn't listen that much to their ballads , but most of the time i play a few dazzling funkjams from this 1983 album ,
again produced by the late Allen A. Jones :

Recommended tracks :
- I'll Get You Back
- Stuck Up
- Will You

Right on , from their debut album .
A talented group formed by the Thomas brothers . I saw drummer Bart Thomas play in a Zapp-Tourshow from 1988 .
I don't know if you have this album from 1984.

It contains slammers like :
- Dance Frite
- Get Ready Let's Party
- Searching For My Lady
- U Can Do ( Whatcha Wanna )

The org has been acting up lately. I saw your complete post but the only part that showed up when I went to "quote" was the Starpoint parts at the end.

Anyway, I was commenting about Freedom. Malaco Records is in my city (Jackson, MS). The cover of that 1981 album was shot at a local disco at the time called Zoli's. I've worn that album out until I've got scratches on "At The Party". lol Their 1982 song "Whodat" was strictly a 12 Inch and never came on an album.

It's interesting that you mention that there is a "Best Of" in Japan. Back in the day, local radio used to promote the hell out of Freedom, as well as Sho-Nuff (another local group). Local DJs were always talking about Sho-Nuff and Freedom touring and being real big over in Japan. Of course, we all laughed and said "yeah right, like two Mississippi band are really big in Japan". In recent years, I've met one of the big wigs at Malaco Records and asked him when Freedom and Sho-Nuff was ever going to be released on CD. He said "You are taking me WAY back, I thought everyone had forgot about them". Then he went on to tell me how they were always touring Japan back in the day. I thought to myself "they are really keeping this sharade going after all these years". Now that I see your post on prince.org (and you aren't even from my state) about a "Best Of" CD in Japan, I see they were telling the truth all along. lol

Thanks for hipping me to the group Power. I can't remember them but I will definately be on the lookout for them.

Sho-Nuff ... DANG ! ... We always flip "Don't Use Me Up" here on the decks . ... that's a JAM !
Even this STAX-album from them below has been printed on Japanese CD .

In Japan the companies re-issue most of the time a series of albums .
The Sho-Nuff above was released together with an album from this STAX-group on CD :

Hey Adience & Wiggles , thanx 4 your feedback .
That site is owned by two friends of mine . A good thang they started to share their knowledge on the net thumbs up!

This is the openig-track for that Tease-album from 1983 :

On that project , i hear a more their own distinctive sound .
Indeed , on the second album that Audience mentioned , the TIME-s influence was present .
Still , the jams are solid , and besides the infectious "Note", i sway on tracks too , like "Better Wild Than Mild" and "Baby Be Mine" and a slammin're-make of James Brown's "Body Heat".
I first found that 1986 album , and since then i followed all the stuff they did as solo-artists and as studio-musicians .
Lead-singer Kipper did a solo-album , the Organ brothers and Chuckii were support-act and backing-band for Janet's Rhythm Nation-Tour , to name some projects .

There was a third Tease album in 1988 , with one of my other favourite tracks from them : "Tingle" , produced by Mtume

Damn, you know about Sho-Nuff too? I'm glad to see these groups made a little noise somewhere other than just here in Mississippi. "Don't Use Me Up" was definately their funkiest jam. "It's Alright" was pretty funky too. Sho-Nuff was most well known down here for two of their slow jams, "What Am I Gonna Do" and "Don't Be Lonely". One of the guys in that group had a falsetto so great that I thought it was a woman until I saw them perform live at a high school dance at a skating rink....yes, they did those too. lol

Another great local group we had was called Wynd Chymes but they weren't on Malaco, they were on another label. If you've heard of them, I think your ass has been down here in Mississippi. lol Also groups like Sparkle, The Rose Brothers, and Kyper.

Only saw Tease twice and never taped a show.
Heard the Mark Morrison tune with the Game loop
