Beautiful, underappreciated vocalist. Will watch the video later (youtube and its slowness drive me ). And Maya's hot! Minnie repeats Maya's name at the end of the full version of Loving You.

I think Mariah Carey bites off a little of Minnie Riperton's style with that glass breaking falsetto scream. "Memory Lane" and "Loving You" are my favorite songs by her.

Minnie had one of the most beautiful, emotion-filled voices to ever hit wax. I could always FEEL what she was singing. Such a sad loss to the music industry. When Mariah hits those high falsetto notes it comes off as showy; when Minnie did it, it MEANT something. It fit with where she was going vocally in a song. Others may have her range but very few have that much emotion in their voice. You can't learn that. That's what a lot of singers lack these days. Too much technique and not enough heart.
Lyrically, who's writing lines like "no one else can make me feel the colors that you bring stay with me and we'll grow old and we can live each day in the springtime"? Its mostly "pay my bills" and "buy me this and that" "I should have cheated" and bitterness to no end. Thank goodness there are still a few decent songwriters these days but you have to look under 100 rocks to find one. Minnie is truly missed. Loving You

Before I was too young to even understand the beauty of her voice I would repeatedly pull out this album as a kid & ask my parents to play it for me... maybe it was the ice cream she was holding I dunno, but I loved this woman to death! Back then my fave was Perfect Angel... Loving You was great also... Memory Lane can still bring me to tears... I think my fave now is Here We Go w/ Peabo, that's a gem right there. Inside My Love is gorgeous too. She just had such an amazingly sweet voice & incredible range... And look @ her - it's like the kid in her is just out there, playing around... letting us hear it... How can you not dig her?

Biography
As a child, Minie Riperton studied music, drama, and dance, and seriously considered a career in opera. However, her affiliation with the famous Chess Records record label soon allowed her to sing backup for Etta James, Fontella Bass, and Stevie Wonder. Riperton sang lead vocals for several small, unsuccessful bands before teaming up with her husband, composer Richard Rudolph, to start her solo career. Stevie Wonder agreed to produce her album, Perfect Angel, featuring "Lovin' You", a ballad to her two-year old daughter Maya. Riperton was diagnosed with breast cancer and had a mastectomy in 1976. She became an active spokeswoman for the American Cancer Society and was awarded the Society Courage Award from President Jimmy Carter. She died in 1979 at the age of 31 and was interred in the Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles, California. In addition to her musical legacy, Minnie Riperton is survived by her daughter, Maya Rudolph, a current cast member of Saturday Night Live.

My favorite song as a small child like 5 or 6 years old was Memory Lane. At 5 or 6 I don't know why I liked it so much because what memories could I possibly have had to relate? I had my mom play it for me all the time and I still love that song.
Can You Feel What I'm Saying is another great song from her. The falsetto at the beginning is so amazing it doesn't even sound human.

You're absolutely right, Baby Love...Mariah even goes so far with her "tribute to" (aka BITING) off of Minnie on the Rainbow cd that the opening of "Bliss" is an almost direct cop off of Loving You....but oddly enough, I ain't mad at her. Sometimes the younger generation has to bite of of the old...it's all just a circle with no one really reinventing the proverbial musical wheel here...

Is it disrespectful if I tell you guys that I was, uh, thinking of her daughter last night before I went to sleep?

She's beautiful and has bad taste in men. PT Anderson's a great filmmaker, but I think he's a loon. Obviously, she saw enough in him to have a baby with the guy. She was here this past summer filming a movie with my favorite director (Robert Altman). I kept hoping to run into her at the grocery store...it never happened.

I'm going to tell ya a weird story. When I was a little girl,I had seen the album cover, for I think Stay in Love, you know the one where she is wearing a blue dress and had long blue nails to match and if I remember correctly, she is hugging a man on the back, and on the other side, she was sitting on a couch by herself...well,anyway,that photo of her on the couch used to turn me on or something,I used to just stare at it all the time.I guess I was having a lesbian moment...it happens I DON'T WANT TO BE NORMAL,because normal is part of the status quo, which I don't want to be a part of- Tori Amos
