Yo, is she the one that sings that song in Death to Smoochy? There's a song that comes on when they're makin his costume of a lady singin real growly "Woh woh woh woh woh woh..." then she hits this crazy clear operatic note. it's dope, but I can't find it nowhere.

Her octave is amazing mushy I never saw all of Death to Smoochy, but I know she's on the soundtrack. Yeah, very operatic.....that was probably her you heard.

She used to sing in English. Then her lyrics devolved into gibberish.

I`ll check out your reccomandations, cause what i`ve heard of Brazilian music, impressed me a lot. "Like a lover" is a wonderful song, have you heard Natalie Cole`s version?

If You Like Dori's stuff, you may also like this guy, Djavan, especially his albums Bird of Paradise, and Puzzle of Hearts/ Oceano:

he's really played and written with a lot of folks: Stevie Wonder, Dave Grusin, Manhattan Transfer("Soul Food To Go", "So You Say"), Michael Franks, Ivan Lins, Nathan East, Ronnie Foster... Roberta Flack wrote a song dedicated to him, called "His Name, Brazil"

...

weird you posted this, i just got hip to the puzzle of hearts album. i like what i've heard so far.

Chico Buarque, Antonio Jobim- Brazil
Serge Gainsbourg-France
Uum Kalthoum- Egypt
Carlos Gardel- Argentina (many songs covered by Nat King Cole)

There Are Not Really Famous In English Speaking Countries BUT Huge in their Respective Countries.
Needless to say, they are highly recommended.

My pick:

The Scene - raw, stripped down dutch rock with beautifull poetic lyrics by singer The Lau

Yousou N'dour - always great senegalese singer / musician who has a bit of a tendency to play watered down western (dance) pop, while his more traditional outings are far more superior (try Egypt for example, a cd combining arabic and african sounds in a beautifull way)

The Chieftains - Irish troubadours who often sing in english, but also a lot in gaellic. Irish traditional music has a purity and spiritual resonance i dont often hear in other kinds of music

Oops forgetting one:

Nil Lara - singer / songwriter born in chili, combining cuban sounds with alternative rock. Great, very intense singer who unfortunately only delivered one full self-titled cd (produced by Susan Rogers, Princes recording technician)
which is one of my secret, selfish pleasures, because almost nobody ever heard of this cd and its so ***** damn good.
