Who remembers hearing "Freak-A-Zoid" for the first time? It was the early summer of 1983 and this song was da shit! A slick electrofunk jam that dominated R&B radio that summer. But that was just the beginning. The 'No Parking On The Dancefloor' album generated one big hit after another."Wet My Whistle" soon began making waves and in my area, the track "Electricity" received tremendous airplay on the radio, even though it was never officially released as a single.Ditto for "Slow Jam".This album was one of the biggest R&B albums of 1983,and just when you thought it was finally running out of steam, they released the funky title track in spring 1984.It too becamne a classic.

I can't say that I remember the first time I heard Freak-A-Zoid. lol I do love that one though. That whole album is a lot of fun. Wet My Whistle is my favorite one on their. You're reading my mind this morning, David! Friday was the first time I gave this album a listen:

It's a good album, but I prefer No Parking on the Dancefloor. Some of it's way too breakdancing sounding. lol That was good for me when I was 11-years-old, but not so much now. I looooove Curious! That song is pure 80s smooth jam dreaminess. I remember hearing that on the radio when I was a young'un.

I'm curious
About your loving
I'm curious
I wanna know what's on your mind

dancing jigwoot!dancing jigwoot!

'Planetary Invasion' is a solid album, even though several of the songs sound just like the songs from the previous album, lol. On 'No Parking...',they came up with a winning formula and they didn't wanna mess with it.I love the track "Scientific Love"...I was shocked when that song didn't become a major hit."Operator" is one of their finest singles ever.

Oh, I forgot how much I hated "Don't Rock The Boat". Like I said before, the late 80s.....yuck! lol

The late 80s was a rought time for R&B bands.Synthesizers and drum machines took over.Even the Bar-Kays' late 80s music was weak.

It sure was. "Struck By You" was horrible. You know how they like to copy other artists anyway. lol It sounded like they were going after EU's "Da Butt" sound.

Another thing about the late 1980s is that, besides the changing of instruments, a lot of full fledged bands were breaking up because of particular artists in the group wanting to go solo. Then, when they went solo, they tried to make big money by crossing over to pop or becoming a balladeer. The Calloway Brothers' music was horrible and I hated Babyface's solo stuff. It's hard to believe he came from the same band that did "Body Talk".

They're one of the nine acts featured on the "Valentines Super Oldies Love Jam" concert that makes it's way to my area on Saturday.I've been a fan of theirs since the early 80s,but I never saw them in concert before.Should be alot of fun.My favorite songs by them:

"Hot Spot" (1982)
"Freak A Zoid" (1983)
"Wet My Whistle" (1983)
"Electricity" (1983)
"Playmates" (1983)
"No Parking On The Dancefloor" (1983)
"Body Snatchers" (1984)
"Scientific Love" (1984)
"Operator" (1984)
"Planetary Invasion" (1984)
"Snake In The Grass" (1988)

what are your favorite Midnight Star songs?

As usual, you have C-LOCKED all of my MS faves---but let us know how the show goes! When I was teen I saw them a few times in concert at the height of their popularity and they put on a SOLID show. Very Old Skool, tight band, great vocals... evoking a lot of feeling and sentiment....just hella GOOD
music....so we even have such a thing as R&B bands anymore? Or is that some weird relic lost on those of us who were living and buying music prior to 1992???? lol

I saw them in concert at First Avenue Nightclub in the mid-eighties. They put on one of the best shows i've ever seen. They had had the whole place jumping. The brother who sings the lead on "I'm Curious" Sounds very much like Marvin Gaye.

I was watching this video with a friend of mine recently. I had to explain what a Midas touch was. He kept saying, "What the hell is a Midas touch?" Apparently he'd missed all those muffler commercials and the fable.

No lol Whistle is old slang for mouth or lips. Wet my whistle - kiss my lips. lips Of course, they're sorta using it in a different way, I guess. "I had to wet my whistle" = "I had to kiss my lips."

Good job they don't have a song called 'Icarus'. smile

That sounds like one of my mates. She's a sweetheart and only 9 years younger than me but it surprises me what I have to explain sometimes.

Mind you, she's the one who said "I love that song - what's it called?". (Hums tune). "I know - 'Dance Merry-go-round'".

Me: "'Raspberry Beret'?". confused
