I'm seeing Midnight Star in concert this weekend (Appreciation thread)

They're one of the nine acts featured on the "Valentines Super Oldies Love Jam" concert that makes it's way to my area on Saturday.I've been a fan of theirs since the early 80s,but I never saw them in concert before.Should be alot of fun.My favorite songs by them:

"Hot Spot" (1982)
"Freak A Zoid" (1983)
"Wet My Whistle" (1983)
"Electricity" (1983)
"Playmates" (1983)
"No Parking On The Dancefloor" (1983)
"Body Snatchers" (1984)
"Scientific Love" (1984)
"Operator" (1984)
"Planetary Invasion" (1984)
"Snake In The Grass" (1988)

what are your favorite Midnight Star songs?

Who remembers hearing "Freak-A-Zoid" for the first time? It was the early summer of 1983 and this song was da shit! A slick electrofunk jam that dominated R&B radio that summer. But that was just the beginning. The 'No Parking On The Dancefloor' album generated one big hit after another."Wet My Whistle" soon began making waves and in my area, the track "Electricity" received tremendous airplay on the radio, even though it was never officially released as a single.Ditto for "Slow Jam".This album was one of the biggest R&B albums of 1983,and just when you thought it was finally running out of steam, they released the funky title track in spring 1984.It too becamne a classic.

Midnight Star was one of my favorite groups back then, I have them on my org profile, and I still listen to them quite often on old school vinyl.Curious and Scientific Love are my favorite songs by them.

I don´t know why but they were VERY popular among Turkish teenagers in Germany in the 80´s, just like most black musicians.A Turkish professor named Ayhan Kaya wrote a dissertation about this phenomenon. lol
It´s in English but has a German title, Sicher in Kreuzberg.

I didn´t like most of the other music that the Calloway brothers did after Midnight Star split up.

SOLAR Records...those were the days....

80s R&B classic of the day: "Operator" by Midnight Star (1984)

I called my baby up on the telephone
I got connected to a freaky phone
The conversation was strictly void
said "If you don't join the party,go home"

The operator said this was no mistake
I've been connecting every move you make
I hope you're ready to do me right
I wanna operate my love tonight

headbang I need to see that video now! Anyone know where I can see it?

I never cared for that one much or the song "Headlines" either. I don't know, they just sound sort of "poppy". The late 80s....yuck. lol

I don't like "Headlines" either! Or the 1988 hit "Don't Rock The Boat" featuring the Whodini rapper.I didn't like it when they started to put hip-hop beats into their songs.I know they were just trying to survive and keep up with current trends, but I was disappointed.

I can't say that I remember the first time I heard Freak-A-Zoid. lol I do love that one though. That whole album is a lot of fun. Wet My Whistle is my favorite one on there. You're reading my mind this morning, David! Friday was the first time I gave this album a listen:

It's a good album, but I prefer No Parking on the Dancefloor. Some of it's way too breakdancing sounding. lol That was good for me when I was 11-years-old, but not so much now. I looooove Curious! That song is pure 80s smooth jam dreaminess. I remember hearing that on the radio when I was a young'un.

I'm curious
About your loving

I wanna know what's on your mind

The late 80s was a rought time for R&B bands.Synthesizers and drum machines took over.Even the Bar-Kays' late 80s music was weak.
