Best at their instruments?

Guitar - Hendrix or Steve Vai
Bass - Flea/Les Claypool/Bootsy Collins
Drums - Neal Pert
Keyboards/Piano - ???
Sax/Horns - ???
Vocals - ???

Honorable mention: Vernon Reid - guitar; Jimmy Page - Guitar; Geddy Lee - Bass; John Paul Jones - Bass; Terri Bozzio - Drums; Stewart Copeland - drums; Keith Moon - Drums

What's your dream band? I guess mine has 3 bass players...

Anxiety

guitar - prince, thurston moore, carlos alamar
bass - kim gordon (spot a trend?), gail ann dorsey (spot another trend? ha)
keys - nick cave plays a beautiful piano...
vocals - david bowie (good LORD), diamanda galas (TOO good at what she does - frightening), sade (when less is more)

these are my choices right off hand for LIVING musicians, at least...wouldn't necessarily want to see them all performing together, but on their own, i'm happy as a clam hearing what they do.

BLACKMF

I dont think you can omit Larry Graham on bass along with Stanley Clarke

Prince seems to prove every year that he is unjustly left out of the greatest guitarist question. Although Jimi will always be the king.

Judging this STRICTLY by those who move me:

Guitar - Hendrix (hands down)
Bass - (Had 2 come back & be honest about this.) After listening 2 Peace Beyond Passion by Me'shelle Ndegeocello, I had 2 ask what moved me more instrumentally. Any song from this album or The Jam by Larry Graham. The choice was the latter. rolleyes smile
Drums - John Blackwell (tho' I hear I need 2 check out Max Roach); Sheila's a close second (if only because I LOVE HER!)
Keyboards/Piano - Cecil Taylor (GENIUS!)
Sax/Horns - Miles Davis, (trumpet/horn); haven't heard enough SAX albums to judge
Vocals - Billie Holiday (from the sadness in Strange Fruit to the slap-happy singing in What a Little Moonlight Can Do, I FEEL her voice). But, if you want to get into ranges and all that other technical crap smile I'd say that in her prime Whitney Houston was like the Mike Tyson of song. Singers on the come-up seemed determined to outdo her (see Mariah). [another edit: after listening to Ella Fitzgerald on my way home from work. I had 2 add her 2 the list. I'm not a fan of scatting, but who better to be named best at her instrument then one who can make her voice sound like one?]
As for males, what once made me all tingly inside from Prince's vocals was the way he could hit those snap-from-screaming high octaves then flip the script on the next note, anchoring DEEP down low then sashaying and shimmying his voice back to that mean falsetto. Ssss ... Owa! wink
Yeah, Luther does the same; but, well ... I don't pay 2 see Luther.
ONE LOVE
