I'm late...D'Angelo is the shit I've owned both of D'Angelo's LPs but only casually listened to them but recently started spinning them semi-regularly..."Alright" "Chicken Grease" "Shit Damn Motherfucker" "Brown Sugar" "Devil's Pie" are the JAM! Anyone heard his live joint?
Anyway does he have any fans left? If I remember correctly is first LP came out in 95 and Voodoo came out around the time of Mama's Gun and Like Water For Chocolate (the holy trinity) in 00. can't believe he hasn't followed that shit up yet... I'll leave it alone babe...just be me

His music (on "Brown Sugar") put me to sleep both times I tried to listen to it, but I just started thinking Jill Scott was the shit today when I listened to HER stuff for a third time so who the hell knows where my wishy-washy tastes will lead me if I give ol' D'Angelo a third try.
Yes, I've never listened to "Voodoo", so that gives me all the more reason to give him another chance.

Voodoo gets better with time. One of the last great soul records.

Alrighty.. I just listened to "Brown Sugar" all the way through with completely open and optimistic ears, and I still don't love it. HOWEVER, I can now safely say that the title track, "Alright", and "Shit, Damn, Motherfucker" are all terrific songs, and the album as a whole has a tuneful, organic vibe that I liked.
*is now off to try "Voodoo"*

"Playa Playa", "Devil's Pie".. sounds pretty tuneless to me so far. Does it get better from there on?

Well, Brown Sugar was a pretty good album, but it just didn't quite have the magic, funk, and rawness Voodoo has. Voodoo was, and still is one of my favorite R&B albums because it showed that D'Angelo could jam and get extra funky. I also think it was a very accomplished project, too. Took him a while to get it released, but as it stands, it was a masterpiece. [Edited 2/5/06 14:55pm] Check me out and add me on:

it's not about the melodies...there aren't any real hooks...it's about the funk, the instrumentation, the arrangement, the drums (?uestlove is a genius), the vibe, the vocals, the production. that's what makes 'voodoo' ths shit. I'll leave it alone babe...just be me

...
As good as the albums were, I always thought his stuff was best live, especially with the Soultronics band he fronted...there was room to stretch out with new arrangements and a full band fleshed out the songs a lot more... ... In time you'll learn that the songs are very melodic, and it's just the production that makes them growers and not showers.

Spanish Joint is pretty dope. The tones on Africa are quite sugary. Untitled is his best Prince impression to date.

Both of his cd's are amazing. I love Brown Sugar, but Voodoo is his best IMHO. Each song is unique.
