People don't like certain music for there own reasons.

If they don't give something a try because it's white, black, funk, pop, gospel R&B or church hymns etc then they are the only ones missing out.

As long as you LIKE what you are listening to, that's all that matters right?
Shut up already, damn.

Go to a show where it's one rap act and one punk act, and the rap kids feel the whole show, while the punk kids are like whofarted during the rap act.

I've never seen a bill with rap and punk acts together. Unless you mean one of those big festival type deals where Green Day shares a stage with A Tribe Called Quest.

In that case you definitely don't see rap and punk acts on the same bill in NYC.

I'm white and for the most part don't like rock. I find it boring musically. Often just guitars and guys who can't sing.

R&B and Soul has great vocal harmonies, great instrumentation (keyboards, bass, horns), and peopol with amazing voices.

And Judas.....Mariah is nota FAKER! She may act like a 'ho on TV but the girl has natural music talent.

I don't think so. I've gone to a few Lolllapolllooozzza shows, and the kids were diggin' Tribe Called Quest, Arrested Development and Beastie Boys as much as they were Smashing Pumpkins, L7, The Breeders, etc.

yeah, but then this was in the days when there were still really good rap groups and also really good rock bands that could share a bill because there was truly a crossover audience then (and the MUSIC was just much better too! IMO). They really complemented each other. I went to tons of punk and hip hop shows in smaller venues back in the late 80s and early 90s and the crowds were always really diverse. The same people that went to Tribe Called Quest, BDP, EPMD, Public Enemy, Eric B. and Rakim, Beastie Boys, etc. were also the same people that went to go see the rock and punk bands like Jane's Addiction, Rage Against the Machine, Fishbone, Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Descendents, and The Circle Jerks. The same people (I guess I'm talking about myself as well here biggrin ) were also way into the 2nd and 3rd wave ska scene at the time, like The Specials, The Selecter, Let's Go Bowling, No Doubt, The Toasters, The Beat, Fishbone (again lol ).

I miss those days. sad I don't think this scene exists anymore. sigh

I was at that Lolla too, and as an 18-year-old, it seemed like the most natural thing in the world.

Why do so many white rock fans have so much contempt for other forms of music suchas (rnb, funk, pop, dance, hip hop). I've never understood why they hate it all so much. Its all related via the Blues right. So why hate?

This is not my experience. I know plenty of white music heads into Rock and Roll that understand about dance music, old R+B, funk... I personally hate current hip hop and R+B, I like the old stuff. But that aint always true. When that Lauryn Hill record came out way back when I plyed the SHIT out of it. D'angelo, too.

I think you are overgeneralising. I can think of hip hop people who have no appreciation for AC/DC or early Slayer. Or David Sylvian records or Wagner Operas, or less macho varients of hip hop like Anticon. I don't think white skinned Rockers in general are against other forms of music.

You gotta admit that current r+b and hip hop fucking sux though, right? I mean don't tell me I'm supposed to pay any respect to a vacuous FAKER like Mariah Carey. You aint sayiong that, are ya?

-----
Current R&B and Hip-Hop does suck but even if he did not. Rockers would still hate on anything outside of Rock. I don't know if it just a matter of having a closed mind or if it is all racial but it is pretty silly.
Since rock came out of Blues.

As usual, you're being a hypocrite and wildly generalizing. It's okay to hate on anything that's not funk, but...

Rockers would still hate on anything outside of Rock. I don't know if it just a matter of having a closed mind or if it is all racial but it is pretty silly.

What the hell ever. That last statement isn't even true.

As usual you don't know what the hell your talking about. I don't understand people being Prince fans and hating on funk. Since funk would be the cornerstone of P's music.

In addtion, since I do listen to rock and associate with many different racial groups going back to my high school years almost 20 years ago. I think I can say that most rockers don't like anything outside of Rock.

Perhaps younger people out of my generation are different but, they obviously are not running the record labels or radio networks. Shit even black bands that step out from RnB and Funk and try to do rock can't get signed to a lable or get radio airplay. Kind of makes me think that it is racism and just having a closed mind to other styles of music.

Now come on with more of your off the wall comments. It would not be a day at P org without someone living in a fantasy world about race and how things work.

This is what I don't understand - why is it that when somebody disagrees with your opinion, they're "living in a fantasy world?"

No one said anything about disliking funk. It's a "if it's not funk, it sucks" mentality. And for your information, Prince started selling significantly more albums when a rock audience started buying them, so you're struck down on two counts.

what a crock thread...

I started listening to 70's soul ,then onto heavy metal, then to new wave /punk
and finished it off with Prince.

Now I'll always listen to all of those.
