confuse It's baffling to me how anyone could have actually heard...

...any of these players and still "hate horns".

And saying horn sections doesn't work either when Duke Ellington and Count Basie's bands are included.

Oh, most definitely, it is. Or should we say, the conductor of a recent orchestra I was in... We finally electrified the violins and then the horns got jealous. biggrin

I can love horns as much as anyone. Especially that big band sound. The sax was my first choice as an instrument to play when I was a kid. (And by the way, for those of you unawares, the sax is not officially a horn. It's considered reed instrument like the clarinet.)

The idea of hating an instrument as an instrument is a little strange. It's just another color in the palette to be used in an infinite number of ways. The one instrument I've had to spend a lot of time warming up to, is the clarinet, because it always seemed kind of boring. But that's just limited thinking and not real, especially when someone like Artie Shaw comes around.

I love these kinds of discussions.

Try as I might, I cannot associate different instruments with different moods.

For instance. Earl Klugh can make a guitar lament or skip capriciously; George Benson, the same, but differently. Steve Vai can make it sound like a hyper being in need of Ritalin -- or he can make it growl menacingly.

Birelli Lagrene can make a fretless bass sound like a paramour's whisper. Marcus Miller can make the same intone languid melancholy. Same instruments, different techniques and effects.

On a visceral level, I've felt a connection to the guitar for as long as I can remember. And, it was a Hendrix video for "Are You Experienced?" that flipped the switch for me. Which probably explains why I've been playing my acoustic and electric for the better part of the day. smile

Look at what someone just lent me...

...Bireli Lagrne & Friends

One of the main reasons I wanted to borrow it was because one of the "friends" was Stochelo Rosenberg.
One of the things he does is perform as a part of the fabulous Romane & Rosenberg duo.

They sat in with us...

...when we were in France last year.

CinisterCee

I get more "feeling" out of the melody figures being played on the instruments rather than the sound itself.
