i can see you're going to need a lot of my posts explained to you in the future. orgnote me with questions from now on instead of just assuming i'm being "sarcastic" or attacking you. i have better things to do than devil you, and i really don't feel like constantly explaining my posts to the whole site. thanks! yes, only some of us get attention with the use of substance and social skills, and some of us get attention by less savory (or useful) methods. i think it's rather obvious to guess which category you fall under.

boy i,ll kick your little ass and send you running home don,t you ever say that about prince again me and prince will fuck you up 2gethr son .and there is nobody greater then your royal purple highness and don,t you forget that boy simon. holla if u hear me punkA thread I've tried before, but been shouted down by people who seem to think that; a) We can't talk about other artist growing reputation at the cost of Prince's b) Don't want to accept that Prince has lost his muse.... arguably... or c) No one can possibly touch Prince for creativity, period. That out of the way... I've been listening to A LOT of Queens of the Stone Age, and Josh Homme in particular... one creative dude (who seems to like a lot of Prince) and a man who has an output to match our man of old. Also, I have been listening to Mylo, a Scottish bloke who make electronic music (Samples Prince, so he must be good!). What have you been listening to that has usurped Prince in your ears? purple princess

In the 90s, Bjork, PJ harvey and Me'Shell N'Degeocello took over where Prince started lagging 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

I'd forgotten about Bjork... excellent suggestion, she really did thrash at the boundaries of 'accepted' pop music. Also, perhaps, did Tricky... he was an oddball... made some very interesting stuff though.
Me'Shell is awesome. Wonderful artists... me and my Josh Homme fixation... I don't know.

christ, what a bunch of uptight assholes.
but to answer the question, I don't think there can be another Prince. nor another MJ or Madonna or Elvis or Beatles or Stones or whatever.... because, in their stature, equal to the quality/creativity of the music, is the media juggernaut they they are/were. and the industry (and the audience as well), doesn't cultivate any long-term superstars in that same way. we might have some that get a good 5 years in, where their output and the celebrity peak at the same time, but there aren't going to be any 20, 30, 40 year careers for anyone that's out there right now.

That's an interesting statement, Astonishing. Do you genuinely believe the industry is short-sighted to kill off artists that suggest potential longevity?
I mean, the British press has sucked up to Oasis for over a decade... and they've been awful since their second album... Some bands/performers are still tolerated. I would like to think that someone will come along to fill the creative void left (though possibly refilled) by Prince. At this moment in time, I'm looking towards QOTSA and their leader, Mr Homme; each album has been an improvement on the last and each album has been more adventurous in its construction.... it's just such a pity that, live, they seem to want their concerts over in a hurry, the speed they play their songs.

I'm not saying they kill them off. I'm saying that they don't cultivate it. After a couple albums, after you're hot, these days, you pretty much have to do it on your own steam, or coast. There's not much support when you're not the hot new thing. And the audience, en masse, doesn't have the attention span and/or loyalty for an artist to achieve longevity. 20, 30, 40 years from now, there will be no pantheon of living legends. For now, we've seen the last of them, unless somewhere down the line things go back the other way.

I think you're right about the coast thing, something a lot of artists and groups are guilty of. Once again I come back to that 'anger'/'hunger' argument. It will be interesting to see how that British group 'Artic Monkeys' get on now that they have fame and, more importantly, fortune. Can creativity outlast wealth?
I'm not sure about audience attention span, however, Emenim has had to retire himself. His jaded, repeat until fade, nonsense had/has a massive audience. The aforementioned Oasis seem to have an audience wildly loyal to their underacheiving wailing. It will be interesting to watch people like The White Stripes and see how they go over the next few years; see if they have the staying power of a Prince or a Stones.

BoySimon said: Fucked up title? Okay, isn't Prince dead as far as the media are concerned? As far as the top ten are concerned? As far as "success" is concerned?
Is it nonsense to profess a liking for another artist? As for those artists usurping Prince's throne... well, could anyone do that? Yes, of course they could, hence my reliance on Queens of the Stone Age and Mylo... without them I would be lost. Prince is a dinosaur making an unusually intriguing comeback. It does not mean I won't buy his stuff anymore, it just means that I find other musicians more invigourating than him.... at this moment in time. So, Prince is dead.... I can think of umpteen other artists more active, more worthy. So there you are. I'M NOT COMPARING, SO I'M NOT MEASURING ALICIA KEYS WITH PRINCE... I'M MERELY STATING THE FACT THAT PRINCE FANS MUST, BY NOW, BE GETTING THEIR INSPIRATION FROM OTHER BANDS/ARTISTS. Prince's absence is no one's fault but his own. We can't be expected to reserve our musical lives for him anymore. He isn't vital enough to be worth that. That's just your point of view .... U can't speak for every single other fan . 2 each it's own .
