I love "A Day in the Life". nod

And the ARMS concert is really cool as well, although I've seen it before. Jimmy Page at his sloppy, addicted worst of course, but still it's very cool to see all three of the Yardbirds guitarists up on one stage together. biggrin

And it's also funny how you don't even have to watch the video to be able to tell who is playing what on the small solo parts. lol

I'm going to go watch the others now.... (they're taking forever to load) mad

I saw that there was a female guitarist. I don't know who she is though.

Well, I do now that I saw the link. I didn't know anything about who toured in Michael Jackson's various bands. lol

I remember her mostly from the Big hair/Mohawk days of the Bad tour lol ...but I know she's been with Jeff Beck off and on since '98....she was one of the few females of the 90's "shreddding guitarists" period....

I'm not sure, really...there have certainly been some great women guitarists in music, from Bonnie Raitt to Emily Remler. But with lead guitar in Rock --- do you think it has to do with that stereotypical rock guitar hero-straddling the guitar-psycho-sexual image ---the idea that this kind of guitar becomes an extension of male libido-- the sexual agression, the pent-up emotion, all that stuff? Or is it simply that female guitarists aren't given the same chances and opportunities?

Also, do female musicians really aspire to that kind of playing? Or do they generally prefer a more introspective, less physical approach? Just asking....

See, this is what I was wondering as well. I was almost going to start a thread about it actually. I haven't been able to play for almost a year now because of an injury, but I hope to take it up again soon. pray

Anyway, I would love to be able to rock out one day. lol But then, I would also feel very intimidated and over-scrutinized if I were up onstage as well. shake It seems that most women tend to pick up the bass instead of guitar. hmmm

And to tA, I was just listening to Heart the other day, which is what got me to thinking about this whole subject. nod

Slave2daGroove

The band Nashville Pussy has a female bass player and guitarist. A little rockabilly meets punk rock but what a show.

Thanks for these links t/A, Jeff Beck just has a vibe of his own and I love it.

Maybe it's just years of conditioning. You know, not seeing any females out there doing it.

From at least the 30s on, males had strong Guitar Player images to absorb from different musical genres...

Andres Segovia, Django Reinhardt, Charlie Christian, Slim Gaillard, Merle Travis, Les Paul, Wes Montgomery, Chet Atkins, Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, Calvin Newborn (the man that taught Elvis how to move), Duane Eddy, Eddie Cochran, Link Wray, Bo Diddley, Muddy Waters, Dick Dale, Pete Townsend, Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix

Maybe the Jennifer Battens and Kaki Kings...

...will spawn a generation of innovative female players.

regarding Jeff Beck:

why is it, Do you think, that Jeff, one of the greatest of all time, isn't always mentioned alongside the usual suspects, your Claptons and Van Halens...d'you think it's because he kinda avoids the spotlight? Is it that he couldn't keep a band together? Sporadic recording? all of the above?

One of the things I like best about his playing is he same thing I admire with Hendrix...Imagination, emotional playing, and (as tA says,) "Big Ears"...( "Diamond Dust" is playing in the background right now)...he can roll with Stanley Clarke and Stevie Wonder, as well as Rod Stewart and Mick Jagger....check that feel he has on his version of Stevie's "Cause We've Ended as Lovers" (from Blow By Blow), or on "Lookin For Another Pure Love" from Talking Book...

Back in the fusion days, Playing with Clarke, Narada Michael Walden , and Jan Hammer, Beck would always say he wasn't on the same level as those guys as far as technique, But he had the imagination, talent and "the ears" to hang with all of them, regardless of style...When Jan Hammer and drummer Simon Phillips cut loose and take off on a track like "Space Boogie" (from "There and Back"), he was right there, almost like "I'll see that, and I'll raise you This!"....

It's Kool that he Rocks hard as they come, yet he's got the introspective, melodic thing happening , too...

In his biography, Jeff mentions that when they were touring with the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Narada Michael Walden would check the band out from the wings and afterwards, Walden would tease him, saying, "You're a softie!"... Jeff would go, "Piss off, I'm Tough!!", but Narada would persist, "You're a softie , and I'm gonna write some melodic stuff for you". Walden wrote Love Is Green, Sophie, and Play with Me for Beck's Wired album...

Little side note, Aud. My first "official" band, The Flower Reverence, when I was 17, was one of 3 bands at Gazzarri's who were picked from this Battle of the Bands thing they used to have. Our prize was to headline on Saturday night. Anyway, one of the other bands had Jennifer in the group. This was before she hooked up with MJ. Anyway, during soundcheck, she and I talked sitting on the stairs on the side of the stage. I didn't have a clue who she was, except for the fact that she was doing the Eddie Van Halen two hand thing like crazy. I remember that she was hella talented and real easy going.

Nice connection. cool

Did most of the other historic L.A. Rock Clubs like The Roxy, The Whiskey, The Troubadour, both Madame Wong's locations (all before the pay-to-play era) but not Gazzarri's.
