Lewis Taylor Threw Down in NYC last night!!!!!! Lewis Taylor at The Bowery Ballroom, NYC
Man! I just woke up! I wanted to post earlier, but I had the make the long drive back to DC, and when I got home, I collapsed... -- Excellent, Kick Ass show, -- and Lewis had a great time! Some US fans have been waiting patiently for 10 years for a a state-side appearancnce. The place was packed--about 700 (in a venue that was probably only intended for about 500,  )
The man did it all...playing guitar and fronting a sharp 4-piece band, He Funked up, Rocked out, did the Pyschedelic Soul/Jazz thang--- the trip ranged from his own tunes like Stoned Pt. 1, Lovelight, and Lucky and "Bittersweet", and through progressive rock covers from Yes and Todd Rundgren, to a fierce take on the Funkadelic tune "Hit It and Quit It"... Lewis was pleasantly suprised that place was so full of diehard fans; It seemed as if the whole crowd knew all the words, vocal arrangements, and chord changes to his songs, and we didn't hesitate to sing them back to him-- sometimes we sang the backgrounds and ad-libs, while he sang lead or harmony... I loved the fact that he stayed after the initial encore, and took crowd suggestions on what to play -- a lot of us shouted for his rare song, "Waves", but he said it was too high, LOL!! --- and he played 'till he couldn't think of anything else... My favorite moment was definitely LT going for it on the fly, playing unrehearsed tunes"Betterlove" and "Lewis II", and calling out the chord changes to the band while the crowd layed down the vocal support! Oh, that and the two people, a guy and a girl jumping up on stage to sing ad libs during his version of Jeff Buckley's "Everybody Here Wants You"...the girl gave Lewis a kiss before she left, and the guy gave Lewis a hug before he left the stage... Great mix of people too-- all races, and from a wide listening background...Jazzers, Rockers, Stoners, Soul-children, the Hip Hop crew, Pop kids---everybody was present and accounted for... I loved it, but above all, I'm so happy that he had such a good time! Before he left for the night, Lewis grinned and said, "I really didn't expect this!" I hope Lewis Kills tonight on Conan O' Brien! OK, I'm going back to sleep now.... ... We're waiting to see if there are further plans...initially, the NYC gig and the earlier Jazz Cafe appearances in the UK were the only confirmed dates, but now there's talk of him coming back to the US in March/April... ... Man, he was smokin' on the axe! He was shreddin' it one minute, doing some nice elaborate jazz chord voicings the next, then playing nice soulful rhythm while singing with the crowd...but it was all blended together, with one song sometimes morphing into another.... ...at one point , during his song, "Shame", they broke away near the climax of the tune and fell into a scorching version of Edgar Winter's "Frankenstein", only to end up back on the original tune's sweet soul changes...I'll paraphrase one UK reviewer on his playing at the Jazz Cafe, it certainly sums up the general feel of last night: '...Like Hendrix and Todd Rundgren partying with George Benson while BB King and Ernie Isley argue about Stevie Wonder'...." Having said that, I'm not sure if you can compress that kind of thing into three minutes on Conan 'O Brien?...Most of LT's stuff takes at least three minutes before it even revs up, so I'm curious about which song he'll choose...maybe an abbreviated version of "Stoned, Pt.1"? we'll see..... No word on LA yet, but if he really does come back in March/April, seems to me LA would be the next logical choice...his stuff really started blowin up in the US last Fall, when KCRW started playing "Stoned", so the West Coast trip is almost a must, I'd think... ... Y'know I wondered about that at first, especially when the opening act was on, but when Lewis and co., hit the stage, it sounded great...not sure what kind of setup they were using , but the difference was like night and day... ... by the way, one of wildest--twilight zone moments occurred during the opening act's set, when Moby popped up, and jumped on stage to play guitar on their cover of Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love"!

I almost forgot! If everything goes as planned, Lewis will be sitting down with Andrea Clarke on her show Sister From Another Planet, broadcasted on WBAI, 99.5 FM - New York on Friday night (10pm-midnight), together with Jay Smooth.... she's scheduled for a talk with him around at 10:30PM EST. It's supposed to be available on the live stream here :

That makes sense as one of the guitar lines in Shame uses the same front end as Frankenstein. The Moby thing I can't get my head around. 
 Maybe someone could arrange for Conan to be kidnapped at the beginning of LT's performance tonight.

WBAI-FM - The radical station. That takes me back. 
They used to play a version (better than the one that ended up on the LP) of Arlo Guthrie's Alice's Restaurant (from either a 1/4" reel to reel or cassette tape) every so often.

Sure enough,the band did an abbreviated version of Stoned--kinda hard to stretch out and cook, with a couple of minutes at the end of a show, but he sounded smooth as ever... Question for paligap. Did he have background vocalists when you saw him live?  Just wondering how 1 background singer was producing the extra harmonies on the Conan performance.

Yeah, They didn't have any...They used that effect on Stoned and a couple of other tunes, but for the most part, it was just LT and the bassist, (though the audience certainly did their part !)

I'm Mingus and Lewis answered my questions on the NY radio show!
Lewis was fab at JC! I was standing right under his mic and I got a kiss the end of his shows! I suggested Lewis should cover Frankenstein and He did Todd for me. What is funny I told Marcus Miller in July 2005 when I bought him Lewis's cds that Lewis could easy do this song. Marcus played a fab version at the JC. Marcus loves Lewis now! Then Lewis do a fab version as well. I wish Lewis lots of love he is a lovely lovely man. Lee and Ash who play with him are great as well. I'm glad you enjoyed the NY show.
