I don't feel qualified to answer this question properly. I only know that I enjoy them both immensely. Prince is a great guitarist - we know this. Sadly, to the casual listener, guitar ability isn't something that's going to be front and center when they think of or discuss Roger: it's the talkbox.

You're more than qualified to answer this, Rip. U dig music, u know what u like, who u like, etc.

Prince's more varied musical styles lends itself to different rhythm guitar playing styles.

The More Bounce vibe, though cool, gets old quick.

Vote goes to Prince for breadth.

I beg the differ my friend..

That's one groove I never get tired of.... biggrin

Plus, that's Bootsy on the rhythm...

Even tho' Prince is underrated as a great guitarist...period,

I have to give the rhythm to brotha' Troutman..

Seen this brotha' in concert and it blew me away...

He played 'More Bounce' as if it was brand new..

And he rocked 'Do It, Roger'....

lol He came behind we were sitting and performed George Benson's

'Breezin'..

I remember hollering out, "Get down Roger!!" to him... biggrin

Pill, wait a minute now. U know you're my boy and all but I KNOW u just didn't print that Bootsy is on the guitar on More Bounce?!!! Now, understand me. We're all players here. I'm not talking about learning a part from a record and then playing it. We can do that shit all day. I could do that in my sleep when I was a kid. But having the exact feel, the nuance, the spirit, nah, it's going to STILL sound like u. What's in u is going to come out in the notes, the riffs, the phrasing. The hesitation on the pocket on More Bounce, Roger DID live. The way he shifts the picking. Alternates if u will. He did that Live. Same as on So Ruff. That's another thing I give to Roger over P. He would totally fuck with the lick that he's playing ever so slightly, just to let u know that shit wasn't looped through the whole song. P would do that on his bass lines, more so than on axe.

It's REALLY good to see folks on here responding to this two cats. It's just something about Roger's music to me though, that still to this day, can bring tears to my eyes. That cat had sooo much joy and passion, it bled through his music. For me to be touched in that way by a FUNK song.... man, that's something special. Granted, I'm more influenced as a musician, and even as a guitarist, overall, by Prince than I am Roger. I won't deny that. But, man, it's just something about Roger's stuff that can really fuck me up. I find that the older I get, the more this rings true.

Man... u and Aud, ...I tell ya...(smile) Seriously, I wish u could have seen Roger live. I've mentioned this before. My mother and myself had the pleasure of meeting Roger at Tower Records on Sunset in Hollywood about 7 months before he died such a wrongful death. He was out here working on some stuff with Dr. Dre. He was so gracious and nice. We talked for about 15 minutes. I busted out my card on him and told him to call me so we can work on something together!

Like Brother Gap, i've never seen Roger live. Maybe i'd have a different opinion.
I'd still probably give it to Prince for the wider variety of styles.

Cool that you got to meet Roger.

Thank u. Yes, it was, indeed. I remember when we were leaving out of the parking lot, I saw Roger get into a taxi. Funny how I always remember that. That sticks with me for some reason. U could truly see humilty on him. Although he had on this pure white suit with a snow white hat, he was still very humble. That's something I look for on P and don't always see.

I gotta say this. It's a shame that Roger had to go before his time. The man had so much music left in him. He had a huge influence on the industry. Even in Hip Hop. "More Bounce To The Ounce" has to be one of the most sampled songs of all time. I know people who despise Hip Hop But loved "California Love" The song he did with Tupac Shukur and Dre. It's been some years now that he's been gone but I wonder what he would've came out with, Had his brother gotten treatment for his addiction, and avoided this senseless tragedy. Roger would be well into his fifties but I believe he would've had some more hits. R.I.P Roger Troutman. Thanks for all that good music.

Great post. I happen to believe that Roger would have been very prominent still TODAY. Unlike P, Roger didn't have an "image" per se, so he would have grown older much more gracefully and it wouldn't have phased his music.

One of the things I loved about Roger was the respect he got from the hip-hop community. I remember EPMD's cameo in the "Everybody Get Up" video. And Tupac and Dr. Dre were mentioned earlier.

Also, his work on Shirley Murdock's albums was so classy and tasteful. Dude was baaaaddd...

I got the chance to see him in concert back in '96 at the World Trade Center Friday r'nb summer concerts. I stayed for both shows; unfortunately, Roger spent a lot of time changing costumes and left the majority of the guitar playing to that young cat in his band at the time (I think his name was Ricardo). He played a little blues guitar (dressed as Elvis) but that was pretty much the extent of his guitar playing that day. Plus, he had that really fat guy (guess he was just comic relief)blowing bubbles at everyone. I did have the honor of Roger blowing harmonica in my face during "Doo Waa Ditty". That was priceless.

His guitar solo during his remake of "Ooo, Baby, Baby" was the s**t.

alright - if CATFISH is up for discussion..

then in my opinion
Phelps is ABSOLUTELY the best rhythm guitar player in funk
& 1 of the best rg in any genre of music.
as GOOD as Roger & Prince are..
CATFISH blows them out the water & in fact..
as it was CATFISH who "discovered" Roger back in the day
I'm sure that CATFISH schooled Roger more than once
& helped Roger become the rhythm guitar master he was!

I mean.. you just cannot help movin' to CATFISH on guitar!
I'll see you tonight..
in ALL MY DREAMS..

alright - if CATFISH is up for discussion..

then in my opinion
Phelps is ABSOLUTELY the best rhythm guitar player in funk
& 1 of the best rg in any genre of music.
as GOOD as Roger & Prince are..
CATFISH blows them out the water & in fact..
as it was CATFISH who "discovered" Roger back in the day
I'm sure that CATFISH schooled Roger more than once
& helped Roger become the rhythm guitar master he was!

I mean.. you just cannot help movin' to CATFISH on guitar!

Nah player, you're not thread jacking at all. Actually, I was gonna mention Catfish earlier, but I couldn't remember his name! Ain't that some shit! I was like "Is homeboy's name Phillip? ....aah hell with it". Cuz I was going to post earlier that Catfish is the one playing that wonderful phased out rhythm on "Flaslight", which is KILLIN'. Still though, it was just the way Roger, especially on So Ruff, played. It's like he's barely hitting the strings at times, yet that shit is clear. Man, I spent many a day when I was first starting to play axe when I was a kid, WEARING OUT More Bounce and So Ruff's records, learning and playing those intricate rhythm guitar parts. My neck would be hurting after me being all hunched over the turntable and my guitar for so long!

Well since the Catfish-jack has been authorized...

...again i'll bust out this record and the pseudo-live version of Give It up or Turnit a Loose as a reference.

This is probably one of the first recordings, after the mutiny, of the newly formed JBs.
Bootsy on bass (Brown calls him back in after the drums/percussion break) and Catfish on guitar.
One of the interesting things to me about this cut, outside of Catfish's stellar rhythm is the sound he's using.
Not that traditional super clean chicken-scratch. There's a hint of distortion.
It's almost like he's playing through a Marshall which gives the track a funky rockin' vibe.

Yep. Dig, Catfish and Bootsy, even at that time, were already into a Hendrix/Sly state of mind. Waay before they hooked up with George. They were ALREADY in that mold. So, that would explain that sound Catfish is throwing in there. With James, no less!
