2 date, this has been my favorite JANET album....

It was a very therapeutic LP for myself and helped me find a piece of who I am in this world.

Songs like Special, Empty, velvet rope, free xone.. etc

it didn't change my life lol, but it is a good album.
i usually don't like janet and i own none of her cds
but The Velvet Rope was the first and only time shed
got my attention.

very cool music on a warm, sexy, organic and personal
album. that's just how i like it.

it was such a shame that she went all poppy again on
the next albums.

i'm of two minds on it. on the one hand, i really love it. it's deep enough that the "janet." rip-off aspects pull it off as its own thing.


on the other hand, a lot of the "depression" aspect seems contrived. plus, it's the "janet." rip-off that begat two more completely lifeless, soulless "janet." rip-offs.

both me and my sister consider that the best album of all time, pretty much.

I just looooove "the Rope"

Yes, the "depression" stuff does seem a bit contrived, but I do love the album. I really didn't get into it until about 5 years after it's release.

It was my 1st Janet album. Lost my "damita-virginity" with it. Since then I bought all her albums (Only Damita Jo I bought the clean version...)

I like "The Velvet Rope" a lot. It was (4 me anyway) her last really solid piece of work.

She basically CONFRONTED ME in the album!!!


She made me think about the way I was tryin to hide my sexuality and who I really were inside.

Iwas hurting so much hiding my real self from people. When this came out was around the first time I came out to my friends and told them hey Im gay shit...told my girlfriend, everything...

it helped. Plus even my mom played this album out

One of my faves by Janet. Her last consistently good cd. I hope the new cd blows my mind like TVR.

I got it late and loved it. I was able to enjoy it without feeling like it was being forced on me. The last Janet album I've purchased.

Actually I think if TVR hadn't of been so hot, A4U and DJ probably wouldn't pale so viciously by comparison.

Not as groundbreaking as the likes of "Control" and "RN1814" and relies too heavily on sampling, which is why it can't be my favorite Janet album.

I do like it a lot, though. I like "janet.", too. It's just "AFY" and "Damita Jo" I hate.

I adore TVR, it's a great piece of work, and the production on it is just stunning - it's my favorite JJ album. My only gripe (if you could call it that) is that it's about 2 songs too long. For me, the best albums are the ones that leave you aching for more, not looking at your watch. But that aside, it's a dynamic tour-de-force.

Although I would not be described as a Hardcore Janet fan, that album had such an affect on me.....just check out my username.

The song "You" was like Janet reached into my life and decided to write a song about it. The first time I read the lyrics to that song my heart literally started to beat faster. I couldn't believe there was someone out there that knew such things about me. I felt like someone had been spying on me. I'm rambling. The point is, Velvet Rope Janet's best album and in my top 3 of all time.

On anothe note, that picture of Michael Jackson is BEAUTIFUL. Seriously, that picture of him is gorgeous. He is literally pretty in that shot.

I didn't like that album. I was happy it touched a lot of people, but it seemed she was going through this poor little rich girl syndrome and it was getting on my nerves. I mean, she said in an interview that she broke down crying when she remembered some teacher making fun of her because she didn't do something right. I mean COME ON. I counsel kids everyday, and if she really wanted something to cry about, I would have her switch lives with them.

I appreciated how she didn't change the gender in Tonight's the Night, but then I realized it was more of a threesome song, so I felt she did it because she knows how that would make her more sexy than ever. Just my opinion.

I absolutely love The Velvet Rope. It seemed that at this time, many pop divas like Madonna and Janet were going towards introspection, spirituality, and reflection. But The Velvet Rope project was special because it helped me through the roughest times and made me realize that happiness and self-respect was important. Despite all of the controversy of the album, to me, it was something in Janet that made her want to get some stuff off her chest and get the album released and it didn't matter to her of who was going to buy it or not and even listen to it. I just believe that this is her masterpiece and it definitely ranks up there with my favorite albums. The Velvet Rope is kinda like her version to Joni Mitchell's Blue with darker overtones, uplifting messages, and sheer ambition. It's a special record and it's my favorite Janet album.
