Street Player is awesome

"Turn", "Blue Love", "Stranger To Love", "Destiny"
and "Best Of Your Heart" are my favorites

"Stay" is just okay to me
I like Badu's version better
"be who you are and say what you feel
because those who mind don't matter
and those who matter don't mind."

did you guys notice how mellow 'Ask Rufus' is compared to earlier albums? It starts off with a blistering funk jam "At Midnight(My Love Will Lift You Up)",then it becomes moody and slow, even jazzy at times. The next album 'Street Player' is also very mellow....how do y'all feel about that album? I noticed that no one listed it as their favorite.

Think of Street Player as Ask Rufus Part II with a bit of disco stylings. It isn't my favorite though, although there are a couple of killer tracks on there like Turn, Destiny, and Stranger To Love and the most popular cut is the swaying ballad, Stay. I rate Street Player with 3 and a half stars. Has anyone heard their Stompin' At The Savoy set yet?

so what do you guys think of 'Masterjam'? I have mixed feelings about that album.Considering that it was produced by Quincy Jones,I had high expectations, but it is somewhat disappointing. The first single "Do You Love What You Feel" is one of their finest uptempo jams, but there's nothing else on the album that comes close.

I know what you mean, considering the people involved in this project it could/should have been huuuuuge.....

but I DO dig some tracks though, most of all Any Love.. I remember at a concert I attended a long time ago, when the guy in the audience standing beside me in front row requested her to sing this one. so she started into some improvised accapella version, while the band was rather lost... most musicians were obviously unfamiliar with the song. still they managed to join in into what Chaka just had started and at least performed some improvised short jam version of the song.. so the guy beside me was happy lol

my theory is that...in 1979,Quincy was more focused on Michael Jackson's 'Off The Wall' album and he saved all the good songs for that album lol

'Masterjam' isn't bad,it's just not the masterpiece that it could have been."Do You Love What You Feel" is just superb and you keep waiting to find another jam like it,but alas, you never really do.The other songs are mediocre.

What did ya think about their album Camouflage neutral ?...the only track I liked on that was Quandary...

HATED this album at first
(with the exception of "Live In Me"
and "What Am I Missing?")

but I love the full thing now
my fav jam is "Any Love"
right now I'm diggin
"Masterjam"
(which BTW somebody uploaded
a full video for that on YOUTUBE)

it's a great album which was
overlooked by the likes
of Ask Rufus, Chaka & Rufusized

"Highlight"
"True Love"
"Lovers In Love"
(which I think is mislabeled
I think it should be "Losers In Love")

are my favorites...
I could do without the rest

pick up ask rufus 1st..then u will understand!!!!!
then i would suggest: rufusized/rufus ft.chaka khan/street player/rags to rufus/masterjam/camouflage/live at the savoy

arif mardin was the key ingredient to making ask rufus what it was...they failed to capitalize on that on street player...sure it has its moments(stay, destiny)..it wasnt as cohesive as ask rufus.but by then, some members left, chaka was...well chaka....

"Through The Fire", "Chinatown" & "I Feel For You"

once I discovered I Feel For You
as an adult... it took me some time to get into
It's actually the most played
Chaka album right now...
I've grown to like all of the songs

"La Flamme" is my everything right now!
but the ultimate is "Caught In The Act"
which is also Chaka's favorite from that album...

I really didn't get into the post-Chaka-Rufus material. I'm really interested in listening to some of it though, but most of those albums are out of print on CD anyway. I hope Warners plans to release a 2-CD Rufus anthology soon because that Very Best Of compilation sucks!

for about 3 years now
I have been working on my vinyl collection
I have most of Prince's '78-'89
including various side act albums
(with the exception of For You, Parade, SOTT,
Batman & The Black Album, Vanity 6 & Apollonia 6)
A WORKING PROGRESS
and I have all of Chaka's shit with Rufus
and most of her solo catalog...
which is very hard to find on CD in stores
amazon.com is great, but I hate ordering online

being that vinyl is so cheap
compared to buying CDs retail
or ordering goddamn imports...
and when you step in those wrecka stows
you always at risk to stumble
upon a rarity or a classic...
for little of nothing
(i.e. Teena Marie's Lady T
goes for a hundid thety eight (138) bucks
on amazon... USED I believe
I bought that sucka on vinyl
for $4)

I think you should invest in a wrecka playa
and build you a vinyl collection

STREET PLAYER

Damn good album with my favorite Chaka - Rufus Trax.

Best Of Your Heart
Stay
Blue Love
Stranger To Love
Destiny.

These songs are so well crafted and beautiful. ESPECIALLY Destiny where Chaka really goes off in this moving jazz tune complete with Clare Fischers orchestra to the fore.
Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.

biggrin Yeah, I love Destiny! One of the first things I tried to play on the Bass--I love that sliding feel (the line itself isn't hard, but gettin' the feel right took awhile)!

She and David Gamson worked on an album, but Warners shelved it (one of the reasons she wanted out of her contract)...they put out a Greatest Hits instead, which featured a few of the Gamson produced tracks...

I agree about Chaka with Arif Mardin...

biggrin I like to play Papillion and Any Old Sunday from (What'Cha Gonna Do For Me)back to back....

I went on You Tube and I saw a rare live performance of their rendition to Stop On By. I was definitely feeling it! I'm afraid to even say that I like it better than when Bobby Womack did it.

Yeah, I just brought the CD yesterday and today is my second time hearing it. I haven't skipped one track yet. Rufusized has it all: Chaka's gritty and immaculate vocals and the funky, jazzy and soulful musicianship of the band. I mean, this is a masterpiece. Thanks you guys!

Ask Rufus! With this album, they finally reached their zenith and Chaka's voice was as rich and vibrant than ever. This was where they moved from earthy and raw funk-soul to more smooth soul doing ballads and jazzy numbers that were timeless. So, what's your fave Rufus record?

I so agree. Can I also say that I suspect that with this album, and a few others with Clare Fisher's inbring, Prince was hipped to his orchestrations?

This album is not only all that you describe, but it also the finger pointing towards so many Prince productions in the future; here are the roots of The Family and Parade...

:mushy.

The only word lacking in your apt description of the album is LUSH...
